Bush's strange remarks to OK Grads |
|
Apparently * told graduates to "use technology but not to become enslaved by it." That sounds peculiar. What is he talking about?
I'd like to see a transcript of that speech. I guess the main point is "leave the enslaving to us."

2. Bush is not allowed to have a computer at the White House. |
|
For two reasons:
1) No digital "paper trail" to his crimes.
2) He's an idiot.
He was just frustrated when he said that.

It is as if The Matrix movie is the extent of his knowledge of technology, and he's just now starting to grasp it, seriously. Really, what the heck... is he preparing for android invasion? If so why doesn't he come out and say it?

6. Holy crap! He's quoting CHAPLIN (The Great Dictator) now??? |
|
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts. You are not machines. You are not cattle. You are men. You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate - only the unloved hate. Only the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers - don't fight for slavery, fight for liberty.(From: http://www.clown-ministry.com/Articles/Poetry/chaplin-great-dictator.html )

14. I'd just like to see an example of... |
|
...someone being "controlled by technology"? Without reading a transcript it's hard to tell if what he said made any sense or if he was just vomiting basic dictator rhetoric as usual. It upsets me because I think this might promote social discrimination against scientists and other professionals who are passionate about technology.

You're probably right. He does have no appreciation for anyone's work so I suppose that's right but it pisses me off that he had to target technology in the process.

23. There's a Ray Bradbury story |
|
Edited on Sat May-06-06 03:58 PM by dmesg
...about a future civilization where people are so dependent on computers that they have forgotten how to do even basic arithmetic. There's this one really old guy who remembers how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide by hand and he becomes a big celebrity when the government finds him. They get him to teach soldiers how to do it so they can calculate the trajectory of manned missiles they are in. The guy gets despondant and offs himself.
Anyways, I think the point was to remember that technology exists to improve human life, not as an end in itself. Science was a servant of humankind at one point, rather than the other way around...
EDIT: My bad, it's Asimov. I'm not an Asimov fan so I mistakenly attributed it to Bradbury because I liked it. Flogging will commence at 8 bells.

Bradbuy has a way of writing fiction that cuts a little too close to truth for comfort. Does Farenheit 451 seem absolutely impossible now? Science and math literacy are woefully low. Something gets called "science" by a person in a lab coat and it's believed. People don't learn to be critical or skeptical. I'm not saying we're being taken over by robots, but people have definitely lost their sense of being active participants in technology and science, rather than just consumers.

It's Asimov. I guess I assumed it was Bradbury because I remember liking it and I usually don't like Asimov. It's called "The Feeling of Power"
