Minutemen recruit blacks against illegal immigrants

The group of 10 to 15 men who took up positions Tuesday outside the gate of a meat processing plant in Pullman see the world a little differently than the 400,000 people who marched one day earlier through the Loop.

"Illegal!" they shouted at any Latino-looking person who popped into view. "Illegal!" snip

in that the exploitative practices of businesses illeglly hire the undocumented worker instead of actually providing for the well-being of the legal worker. The undocumented worker, who in many cases, comes from nothing, is simply trying to survive. If some blacks can't understand this, then they need to be with Alan Keyes. Good riddance. Look, blacks agree with the minutemen because they have seen their own jobs being usurped by illegals. Plain and simple. I'd be pissed too if MY job was usurped by an illegal, and so would you.

It's easy to make armchair pronouncements about how xenophobic and racist it is to agree that we have an illegal immigration problem. But once it affects one of us directly and personally in the form of a job loss to an illegal, all of a sudden it's a crisis. I think that's hypocrisy.

My job *was* usurped by a foreign worker, although not one here illegally (or here at all for that matter) when my last IT job went to India. I don't blame the Indian man or woman who got that job - there are those higher up whose actions make them culpable.

Sure you can blame the company. And the government for allowing an influx of H1B visas which have the same effect of lowering middle class wages and usurping American jobs. I say we cut at least in half the number of H1B visas. I would be pissed too.

this past week on the local newscasts. Peculiar isn't it? Are they going to join up with the KKK next? I know there has been bad blood between the Latino communities and black communities in the past. But they should be working together for human rights not against each other.

For instance, for decades, hotel, restaurant and janitorial jobs were entry-level jobs held by many black Americans.

And while some might discount the significance of a janitorial job, such positions were eagerly pursued. From 1945 to 1980, janitors earned excellent wages because of their strong union. But in the early 1980s, when an abundant supply of immigrant workers became available, non-union firms hired them at half the going wage. Now, you rarely see a black hotel or restaurant worker.
