Please lay off of Mrs. Alito
With all due respect to the many honorable posters here on DU, I feel the need to address the recent posts concerning Mrs. Alito, and her emotional moment during her husband's confirmation hearing. While I am no fan of Mr. Alito (but I am not against his confirmation, either), I find it rather appaling that the members of this forum would post such things as "Hey Mrs. Alito! Go f*** yourself!". I find it destructive to the values that we hold so high for us to be making personal insults to any person, especially one who is not to blame for anything. These forums are for political discussion, not political name-calling. I truly hope that in the future we maintain our dignity, and refrain from making personal insults to people such as Mrs. Alito.

27. Yes, and I think it will be the downfall of the nation
With Scalito, Roberts and that oreo guy working together to undermine the republic, I fear for the future of the country. That's why I want to start impeachment proceedings for both Bush's illegal appointments as soon as he's confirmed. Bush is not a president, he's an imposter, and he should not be appointing ANY judges.

57. I was told in a thread I started that they would have to be impeached
And convicted in the Senate. It's possible if we can install new and shake the Democratic Congresscritters up enough this year. Once some young, pretty white girl dies with a coathanger embedded in her uterus, the tables will turn. Unfortunately, I think it will take that event to galvanize the nation to fight back.

66. Actually, I think it does.
Actually, I believe it does. I believe that it shows I have an open mind, instead of one that immediatley shuts out all viewpoints not flaunted by the most liberal of Democrats. Don't get me wrong... I often find myself in support of liberal ideals, however, in this case, I feel that Mr. Alito has shown himself to be an excellent candidate for the Supreme Court. I have three main arguments for this:

1. To be a justice, you have to have the abilities, not the politics.
Mr. Alito has shown, at least to me, a knowledge of understanding about the law upon which he will be able to make smart, well-thought out decisions. While I am sure that his personal viewpoints will prevail in his rulings, I do believe that he is interested in interperting the Constitution for the American people as best he can.
2. When there is a Democratic President, we will want fair treatment of his/her nominee.
If we oppose Mr. Alito solely because of his political affiliation, we will set a precedent that will muddle the confirmation process, and therefore, the Supreme Court, from here on out. We must look at Mr. Alito's ability to serve on the court (which is why I was against Harriet Miers), not at his political affiliation.
3. It could be worse.
Speaks for itself.

99. So, are you in agreement that the executive branch can have
sweeping powers, like wiretapping, without checks and balances in effect or abided by? And if you're in agreement, don't you think that view would be political?
Are you pro-life or pro-choice?
Do you think he might be just a bit too far right to provide an adequate middle-of-the-road replacement for Justice O'Connor, to keep the Supreme Court somewhat more balanced?

120. He does not make smart, well thought out decisions.
A review of his dissents reveals that he makes decisions based not on the law, but rather on his narrow world view. This is the world view that believes it is lawful to strip search a child, to call for limiting the number of women and minorities in the nations finest universities, and restricting access to safe abortions to the point where the right is gone forever. He is a man who does not believe in the separation of powers and seeks to vest unparalleled power in the executive. These are some of the reasons this man is not qualified to sit on the Supreme Court. Saying anything else to you is a waste of time.

Unconstitutional rulings, having a dictatorship, and being REALLY against female and gay rights. Yup, gotta like those abilities he has. Also like your saying we should just roll over and let him on the court -- the heck with questioning him and making poor, poor wittle Mrs. cry... boo frigging hoo.... she should take a page from Hillary's nbook... because that is exactly what you're saying.

You can't eb open-minded to someone narrow-minded.

And, it couldn't be much worse (and THAT'S why we should let Alito on the court, because there could be worse???? Hey, I have cervical cancer, but it could be worse! I could have pancreatic cancer!)

If I didn't agree with his actions I would not support his job. And his actions and deeds and clubs he's been apart of are against everything I believe in. If I was married to him we would have a lot of arguing. Heck if I found out all this information before I married someone like that I would say "wedding off!". I could NEVER marry a man who doesn't value me as a woman.

111. I never accused her of a thing.
Just wondering if she cries for all the injustices and atrocities in this world. Is she aware of any? Or is she just part of the ruling class that would have me believe she is human.

I didn't like the insults flung at Chelsea... but I didn't see her out blubbering about having her feelings hurt either.

Bottom line... I don't buy ms. alito's "sensitivity" and she's made herself fair game IMO by playacting. That's right - I don't believe her feelings were genuine.

I would have felt more sympathy for her if she broke a nail and cried. IMO, that would have scarred her far more than the BS that was being tossed around at the time of her play-acting.

35. Sounds like a position
worthy of the great Scalito himself: "I'm not against his confirmation--but neither am I for it! It depends what you mean by for and against. That would depend if he was consistent with the constitution and whether such a case actually came up before me"...:wtf:

and there's nothing wrong with shedding tears, especially in the midst of a high-stress situation, the blatant hypocrisy/storytelling by the MSM and the Republican Party re: the treatment of politicians' wives, plus the fact that the entire episode is scripted, angers me to no end.

They will play this video till we puke to show how insensitive the Dems are (even though Graham caused the crying). I have never seen so menaingless a yell by Dean become media fodder that all but made him a joke and killed any chance of him becoming the nominee. And now you will see this with Mrs. Alito. You will likely feel more comfortable while you are here.... you won't need to feel it neccessary to instruct us on how "appaling" (sic) our posts are.

As for "political name-calling", well, we do it all the time. Delay is a liar and a criminal and an extortionist. Bush is a war criminal and a liar and a murderer and a fascist. Kenneth Blackwell is a criminal fraud. I could certainly go on.

"Mrs. Alito" is, in my book, a cosmetic back-drop for a LIAR.

113. Lindsey Graham was a participant in the rehearsal at the White House
where he and others contributed to a "mock up" coaching Judge Alito before the hearings. If that is not astounding, it is not tin foil hat to consider that Mrs. Alito was also coached. She is acting according to how she was coached to act. Tears? Heh--how pathetic. She oughta stay home and watch her "man" on Teevee if she cannot take the flak.

And after it is over--she will be set for life. Did this woman ever have a "career" like Laura Bush claims to have?

Come on. We don't need dramatizations of a poor widdle woman standing behind her man, shedding tears over the attacks of the mean old Democrats. It is just plain soap opera ish.

And this is the way our government functions? With these little play acts--family and all of that to decide who will be a judge for life?

This man believes in a version of the constitution that doesn't exist. A constitution they believe gives the President the status of King. These men, Alito, Roberts, Thomas and Scalia will have the responsibility of either giving or denying this power to the executive office rendering congress obsolete. If this happen, we will all become enslaved, our children will have no futures, our country lost. I'm not ready to live like that.

on edit: if this is too much for the delicate Mrs. Alito, perhaps she should just stay home. I mean, is there really any need for her to accompany him on his job interview?

(sorry that I made this post a second time. I accidentally made the first reply to the wrong post.)

139. No, my newbie friend, I don't think we missed the point at all.
The crying bit is all over the news... sure we're going to comment. I would suggest being around longer before telling people who have been here for YEARS how to post at DU. Seriously.

If you want a political discussion, click to another thread. They're there. If you can't find a political discussion you like, start one. But don't do the "oh, poor mrs. reich-winger." It won't get you too far.

When one makes a spectacle out of one's self, one should expect the eye rolling that follows. And after 5 years of these genocidal, terrorists biggots, we're all a bit too pissed to say a mere "shame on ms. alito." So, fuck her is what you're going to read.

The pugs are and will continue to portray this woman as a victim while what she really is is a willing co-conspirator. :nopity:

135. As Mrs. Alito herself might say: "Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke."
Mrs. Alito should watch proceedings on the TEE VEE in an ante-room if she can't manage to keep her shit together.

137. This is not the New York TImes.
It's not even the New York Post: it's an opinionated message board.

If we can't let fly our true feelings here, where can we?

This is where WE GO for political name calling!

Alito is a piece of bigoted crap. The last thing we need on the supreme court. If he brings his family in to watch the circus and try to sway the questioners, well, they're fair game for us.

(Not that I'd do it myself -- not my brand of fun. But I'd defend to the death the right of my fellow DUers to say whatever they want...)
