BREAKING: ANOTHER GOSS AIDE IDENTIFIED IN FORNIGATE
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/000578.php

<snip>
The Mafia-esque moniker has attracted attention and jokes -- but little new information, until now: Newsweek magazine is the first to identify Nine Fingers as Brant Bassett, whom they also say is "a former Goss aide."

He may be a more central character in our story than the SDUT made him out to be.

Bassett is reported to have been a case officer with the CIA's Directorate of Operations, where Foggo worked. Their paths crossed a number of times over the years and they became friendly, I'm told, which isn't a stretch, given that two publications now put Bassett in poker games with Foggo and Wilkes.

An enduring mystery to this fiasco is why Porter Goss promoted "Dusty" Foggo to the very top of the CIA. Now, informed sources are speculating that Bassett may be the link that explains that mystery, at least in part. Bassett, a counsel and staff director for the Human Intelligence panel of Goss' House Intelligence Committee, had ample opportunity to introduce Goss and his close aide Patrick Murray to Foggo. Did he?
<snip>

:wow:

28. Tinfoil moment: What if "Fornigate" was a NEGROPONTE trap?
OK, put on your tinfoil hat and hold on with me for a second.

:tinfoilhat:

Negroponte is one mean Machiavellian mind, so I wouldn't put anything past this guy.

We have seen how quickly he proposed his buddy Hayden to replace Goss. This may have been prepared in advance. What if "Fornigate" was an entrapment? What if what Negroponte just needed some truly embarrassing photographs of Goss to literally force him to resign?

Makes you think, doesn't it...

30. Yes, and Hayden is a much more adept Neo-Con enabler.
Good analysis. We'll never know for sure, but your theory is, IMO, pausable.

Hum ... How about we keep on our Democratic Senators to NOT confirm Hayden?

He is, a greater evil to Our Constitution when placed as DCI?

So they had to come up with another brand and apparently W tested well.

Edit: I hope Molly didn't come up with it, it's too cutesy for his evil.

10. Rape is not a joke.
Edited on Sun May-07-06 10:45 AM by TahitiNut
Whether in prison or not, whether the victim is male or not, whether the victim is a felon or a Republican or not. It's just not something to joke about. (As a 'Nut,' I'm more willing than most to joke about almost anything, too. I've rarely been accused of 'good taste.')

Not a subscriber to 'political correctness,' I've probably held my peace too long on DU when DUer's have made 'humorous' allusions to prison rape. Please. It's not funny ... not even in a schadenfreude sense.

14. Yeah, I don't want to come across as a pissy PC funhater
but rape just is not funny, and I think if everybody at DU had read what I have about the institutionalized culture of rape in prisons, nobody would make these jokes. I also have a friend who has been in for 8 years, so I am working not to be extra sensitive about the issue, but I will just respectfully second TahitiNut.

16. Maybe you or TahitiNut should start a thread on this very subject! I
admit that I'm woefully ignorant, in part I imagine, because of denial. I just can't stand the idea that it might be a real 'risk' for those in prisons, and not wanting to read about the intolerable, I probably tend to ignore it. Joking about it is not an option, but ignorance isn't good either.

17. I don't think I have the time and energy right now, nor am I
an expert - I just happen to be reading about what is going on with the prison system culture in the good ol' USA in a book called Lockdown America by Christian Parenti - but I am under the impression that it is quite common and condoned, as they say. Parenti cites many instances of the guards putting troublesome inmates in with known predators, for example. Not good.

As well, he characterizes prison rape and, essentially, prostitution as the absolute norm - maybe not everybody is involved, but pretty much everybody at the more hardcore institutions, which appears to be a substantial majority these days.

I also claim woeful ignorance - even though Parenti lays out this very terrible picture, he never specifically mentions any institutions my friend has been at, so I stubbornly cling to the notion that they are better run than the places he talks about.

I am really a terribly vindictive person, and like the idea of revenge on these bastards as much or more than the next guy, but from my perspective just losing one's freedom is quite bad enough for me. I would surely lose my mind in a prison setting, rape or no.

By the way, my buddy and I don't talk about that aspect (prison rape) at all, but he has validated much of what I have heard about racial gang style action in the system; he is a good guy, but has been forced to have alliances with some white racist types simply for protection. And although his initial plan was to get every good behavior point he could and get out as soon as possible, he has gotten into trouble for a few fights, which he doesn't want to talk about in detail but characterized as absolutely unavoidable in the culture. You simply must stand up for your allies, or you will wind up in much worse shape.

I feel no regrets for my forgoing comments on a proven smarmy PUBLIC FIGURE. That may make me a heartless and crass person in some people's eyes, but this is a public board and "Dusty" becoming "My Bitch" to "Tiny": is f**king hilarious as a fantasy visual to behold. :P Who mentioned RAPE here? I did NOT.

Besides, who knows, it might be love at first sight? Stranger things have happened in The Big House ;).

26. Live it up, then
You want to enjoy the visual, go right ahead.

I pretty much always love your posts, and frankly I can relate to certain amount of heartlessness and crassness, but saying that you didn't mention rape in a visual of one guy becoming another's guy bitch is a tad disingenuous. I'm not saying I think you're a bad person, because I don't, but you should own it - you're suggesting that this scumbag get roomed with a big bad inmate who is going to make the scumbag the inmate's "bitch". I'm not sure how that visual could be described as anything but rape.

It might be love at first sight, but somehow I don't think that is the image you find so effing hilarious. I think what you think is funny is the Hollywood comedy image of the villain being buggered, like the guy in the gorilla suit who gets put in the cage with the real gorilla in whatever movie that was, Airplane or something, or the funny little screenshots we do of DeLay, Rove, Cheney, and * in the slam. That stuff is somewhat funny, I'll admit it. But don't get surprised when your vision of Dusty getting made into a bitch by Tiny gets checked. It is too far, you've just crossed into "rape joke land", where nothing is really very funny. Pretty soon you'll be debating the Duke lacrosse case with a bunch of hormone crazed freaks who think they really, really, no, Really, know what happened, when nobody else that wasn't in the room really doesn't know. It's not a pleasant thought, I am sure.

/end of screed, really just doing this because your denial of the rape image was so disingenous, I hold you no ill will, please do not shoot me as I back out the door ...

My brother retired as a Penitentiary Captain within a State Prison. I'm fully aware of the tragedy of prison rape. No, it's horrible.

If people do not share my DARK sense of humor, please use the *Ignore Key*?

Really, continuing to lecture me on topics, on which, I share your concern and empathy, is a clear sign that you and I share DIFFERENT sensibilities.

Best regards :-) :hi:

p.s. Being a feminist who loves the humor of the late Sam Kinison, I'll concur that my sense of humor is not only warped but twisted. However, when it comes to my day to day compassion for those who suffer from emotional trauma, I really am a thoughtful person. Both one's sense of humor and demonstrated day to day behaviors, are not, by any stretch of the imagination, one dimensional.

Yes, the sentiments expressed within my first post were DARK, politically incorrect, and IMO, hilarious.

33. Well, some might also have regarded the Duke rape allegations as
... an opportunity for some "dark humor." Even as a fan of "dark humor," I didn't. If there's anything more completely horrifying than being a victim of rape, I guess it'd be being trapped with virtually no escape from the rapist and being victimized repeatedly - and having the public at large regard it as funny. I know of nobody, male or female, gay or straight, young or old, who wouldn't regard that as a "fate worse than death."

I had that feeling, knowing your posts. I mean the feminist who likes Sam Kinison. I'm sure it generally makes you loveable yet oddly prickly. Short n fiery, one might say. All for the better.
We do have a difference of opinion comedically, but then I am a white male straight American feminist type guy, so I may take on a certain over-PC-ness to compensate. To each his own. I just get my panties in a bunch sometimes because of my friend in prison.
Cheers

No shame in having our heartfelt issues.

I just thought it mindlessly funny to give ole' "Dusty" another nickname.

But there's plenty of personality on this board, so I must be more careful.

Yeah mindless non-PC jokes are sometimes my forte :P.
