ANDREA CLARK PASSED AWAY TODAY
Andrea passed away peacefully a little before 3pm
today, with her family and her friends at her bedside.
We love her so very much and we are going to miss her
terribly. We hope that the battle that we fought for
our sister will bring to light and bear witness to the
horrible acts committed in the name of ethics in
hospitals across the state of Texas.

The fact that we had to fight this battle is both
frightening and a sad commentary on the so-called
"ethics" now being practiced in medical facilities in
this state. The battle for life is a difficult one,
in the best of situations, but when a family is put
through what we had to go through at such a time, it
is especially agonizing.

We wish so much that we could have spent more time at
our sister's side, when she was living and fighting
for her life, rather than having to visit our
attorney's office, give interviews to radio and
television stations to let the public know of the
atrocity about to befall Andrea, and literally stand
outside the hospital and beg them not to kill our
sister. In attempting to deprive Andrea of the most
basic of her human rights--life--St. Luke's Hospital
managed to deprive her family and her of that which is
most dear to us all, when we are faced with the death
of a loved one: a proper goodbye.

How, in the name of God, anyone can call putting
someone to death when they are at their most helpless
and begging for their lives "ethical," we cannot
imagine.

6. My condolences
But I suggest you might have a new fight on your hands--a willing and determined one: sue the hospital that brought all this to the forefront. Even if you don't win, it will bring out all the sore points with the system, and perhaps down the line prevent other families from going through what you have.

No words can take away the pain of loss for you and your family, add on to that the anger and frustration you are feeling because of the situation that your family had to endure.

Maybe there was a reason, to bring to light this inhumane law. Andrea's fight was not in vain. May your family find the peace you deserve, and time to heal.

I send my thoughts to you and yours.

18. I have been watching this unfold, silently.
Melanie, you and yours fought the good fight for your sister. You did all that was within your power.

Unfortunately, you were up against something that, in today's world, held higher cards.

Andrea was indeed fortunate to have you on her side.

May your sister now rest in eternal peace.

27. Melanie.... her fight, your fight for her life...
will surely not be in vain. You have unmasked the ultimate secret of our multi-tiered health system-- that a failure to observe our most personal wishes does, indeed cut both ways. Here, your sister desperately wanted to live and fought so hard and your family was united in trying everything possible to make it so. That, your decision to continue to fight for life was to be taken away, is unconscionable.

I pray that you will all be at peace. Your fight was a truly important one. Others may well benefit directly from your turmoil. May Andrea's strength remain with you all.

family. It is hard right now but know that you did all you could to save her and that she went on her own terms and not at the hands of a cold unfeeling hospital because of all you and your family did. Andrea is at peace now and would want her love ones to be at peace. Through you and your fight there are many that mourn your loss with you and remember Andrea, even if they didn't know her personally. She will not be forgotten. Hopefully one day you will be able to smile through your tears at the memory of the love you all shared.

You and Andrea and all your family have been so brave throughout this ordeal. I hope if there is any comfort that can be had from all this for you, it will be that you fought tirelessly for your sister, and in doing so you have awakened many Americans to the corrupt and unjust system that needs to be exposed and changed.

Take care and please keep speaking out. You have been such a positive force and please know your actions will continue to resonate and are greatly valued by so many.

"You Did Not Merely Die, but You Were Murdered"

Music: The Art of the Fugue, Contrapunctus 7 By J.S. Bach.
Sequenced by David Grossman.

You did not merely die, but you were murdered,
And so my anger magnifies my grief.
Love and hate are clean and filthy water
Spilling through my veins like hell unleashed.

I would but mourn, but vengeance clouds my sorrow;
I would but kill, but love finds there no peace;
I would but weep, but weeping is a river
That flows with vast intention to the sea.

I must, I must confess that I have lost you,
And find a place to plant my plucked-out love,
And look to justice, not revenge, to free you
To dance again with joy where loved ones live.

Get some rest Melanie... You are a loving sister.
You and your family fought the good fight, as did Andrea...
~ Peace ~

I hope for all your sakes she was lucid at the end, because I know one of your greatest concerns was that she was being overmedicated into unconsciousness, and so unable to let her wishes be known.

Regardless, I believe she was aware you were all with her to ease her crossing.

It's a horror what these health care 'providers' put your family through. In the end, you may not have been able to save your sister but maybe other unsuspecting families who send their loved ones to St. Jude will not have to go through a similar ordeal.

One thing is for sure, no one could ask for a better sister then you.

Peace to you and the rest of your family.

64. Melanie, I am so sorry that your sister has crossed
and left such a huge hole in the heart of your family and friends. I recently lost my MIL, two years to the day that we held my mom's memorial, March 5th of this year. Andrea is a heroine to all those whose suffering happens in the shadows, away from the public ear and in groups that haven't the funds and means to gain acccess to care that should be the aegis of each and every human being on the planet, certainly the country. She has focused a laser sharp spotlight on this issue and I, for one, will spread the word to see what can be done to raise the awareness of this cruel and nazi like treatment of human beings whose only crime is to have the bad luck not to a member of the rich and influential circles.
God bless you Melanie and I want you to know that you'll be in my prayers, you and your family and friends. God bless you and keep you...

67. I am sorry
to hear that your sister died, especially under the circumstances. The loss of a sibling is one of the most difficult things in life. The frustrations from dealing with an inhumane bureaucracy must add to that. During your families' hardest days, you fought a bigger fight, so that others do not have to have the added pain and suffering that you have endured. For that, Melanie, I thank you very much.

Whatever else you do, take time for yourself now. Again, I am sorry for your loss.

The new doctor took over instead. This just happened the way it often does in the unit--sadly and quickly.

This is a battle that should never have needed to be fought. I'm so disgusted by this hideous law, but I'm glad that you were able to prevail and let nature take it's course as Andrea wanted. I'm also glad for her and for you and your family that you could be with her when her time came. My heart goes out to you and your family in your time of grief.

Never forget that Andrea is in a much better place now... I absolutely believe that.

You fought like a tiger for your sisters dignity. You have touched so many people--Andreas cause brought the most liberal liberals together with the Right to Lifers--a small miracle which won't be soon forgotten. She was a miracle baby and a miracle woman. Now she's at peace.

In time the recent, terrifyingly Kafkaesque nightmare will fade, and be overtaken by all the years of love and good memories.

115. If Percy Shelly can provide any small comfort...
I've taken the liberty of changing the pronoun; these are words that have comforted me in the past.

Peace, peace! she is not dead, she doth not sleep,
She hath awaken'd from the dream of life;
'Tis we, who lost in stormy visions, keep
With phantoms an unprofitable strife,
And in mad trance, strike with our spirit's knife
Invulnerable nothings. We decay
Like corpses in a charnel; fear and grief
Convulse us and consume us day by day,
And cold hopes swarm like worms within our living clay.

119. My sympathies
Your sister sounds like a wonderful person. She was lucky to have such a supportive and loving family.

I went through something similar with my sister in the early nineties. She was diagnosed with ALS in 1989 and died in 1993 after much suffering. She went from an active young mother with 2 young boys to a physically broken thirty-something who could not even move a finger or talk to us. The pain of those years will never go away completely, but with time you will learn to think and talk about it without being devastated. Talking about it is so painful, but not dealing with the pain will have dire consequences in the future. Sounds like you understand, but try to help any family members who refuse to deal or think if they ignore it, that it will go away. Someday they will thank you.

If you ever need to talk about it, please PM me.

Peace to Andrea, to you, and to your family.

121. So Sorry
Melanie,

I am so sorry. I really allowed myself to hope this would turn out better. It's awful that your family had to spend so much time and energy these past weeks fighting for the idea that Andrea's was a life "worth" fighting for. For what it's worth, please note that very few families resist the pressures you found yourselves under from the hospital staff. Fewer still - virtually none - prevail against "futility" pronouncements. Please remember that. And please extend my sympathies to the rest of your family.

130. Article in Monday Austin-American Statesman
This article was obviously written and filed before Andrea passed away, but it lays out the issues pretty well. It also does a pretty good job of showing how the concerns over "futility" has brought people from diverse political perspectives together:

'Futility' law gives doctors too much power, groups charge

But, at the same time, I can't help myself. Fuck St. Luke's.

Doesn't Primum non nocere mean anything to these bloodsuckers?

I am truly, truly sorry for what happened to Andrea and your family.

151. No one should have to walk the path that you and your family have walked.
Love to you.

152. Thank you, my friends, for your kind regards.
We are going to miss our sister so much. Don't ever let anyone try to convince you that a loved one's life is not worth living simply because they're confined to a hospital bed. No one has the right to decide that for another, or another's family members. Not doctors, not clergy, not anyone.

As a family, we are thankful that Andrea's final battle for life was of benefit to others who now, or in the future, might find themselves in the same position. We thank you so much, DUers, and right to lifers who post here and elsewhere, for your help in this fight.

I'm so sorry you did not win... but I'm not at all sorry you fought. Go easy on yourself.
