Dr Phil today ......OUTRAGE ( Need Opinion)
While making lunch I was listening to Dr. Phil. I am about to write him and the FCC. How dare he put kids on TV that are being emotional/physically abused by their parents at 9 and 10 years old. Everyone will know and this will follow them forever. How is this legal?

5. I absolutely agree. If he wanted to really help that family, he'd done it
privately. This was just a ratings ploy. Sickening. I've had many students who suffer that and worse. I'd never broadcast something like that. It is the hardest thing to do, call CPS and know that within a few short hours, those kids will be taken out of their home and put into foster care. I once had a kid beg me to let him live with me and Mr. kt. The police later told me when they took him from the house, he begged them to take him to my house. It is just awful.

dr. phil is a heartless piece of shit and (I believe) a shrub-lover at that. I was in the audience when he did a show interviewing Kerry. I was picked to ask a question. Not only did they completely rewrite my question and make me practice it, but then they didn't even let the three of us who were chosen ask our rewritten questions. On the following day when he had the christo-fascists zombie-brigade of shrub-lovers there, they got to ask their little question. And over the years, I've heard him make little comments that led me to think he may be a reich-winger.

I freaking hate dr. phil.

12. ok..

Devil's advocate. For some people, shows like Dr. Phil are the only way they learn about social issues. I think this particular show was over the top, but I thnk he does serve some purpose. Certainly there are worse things.

30. He does serve some purpose... I'm not sure exactly what, but some...
People do get exposure to social issues on his show. And maybe some people have no idea what child abuse looks like. But I get so tired of these pop-psychology "doctors" (yes, I know, he really is a doctor) making it seem like recovery is easy. I have some experience in the area of emotion recovery (personal story I don't wish to share on the Internet) and it is much more difficult and involved than he would lead the audience to believe, even though he does provide after-care.

When he was on Oprah once a week, I thought he was ok. Not great, just ok. I wasn't surprised when he got his own show. The first season I watched it, but I already didn't like him 5 days a week. Once every seven days on Oprah (every Tuesday!) was enough for me. I find him equivalent to Montel Williams or Maury Povich. I am weary of any of these shows. However, I do like Oprah, so I guess that does make me a bit hypocritical. Dr. Phil just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

When I was in the audience that day, we all got the Dr. Phil magazine under our waiting room chairs (along with his latest book.) There was an article written by his wife, Robin, all about how she spends her day serving her husband. I serve Mr. kt, but he, in turn, serves me. This article didn't feel like a give and take relationship, but rather she serves and he takes. Our all-Kerry audience was cracking up over the article prior to the taping. Later, I read through his book. It was ok, but again, more cliche sayings and just very shallow.

However, I must concede your point. To people who get all their understanding of the world on the television, he does serve a purpose to at least exposing these people to a bit of what people experience. Wow. Living in a Dr. Phil world. Scary! :scared: :hi:

6. I literally couldn't believe what I was seeing
that poor little boy is so cute and seems like a nice kid. It simply outrages me that people like those parents can have kids and no one seems to give a rats ass but people like me are considered a risk to children. I hope that at least he gets that family help. Those poor kids are literally being destroyed by those bastard parents.

11. well...to balance your perspective..

Dr. P also said the mother would no longer be allowed to be alone with the children. But, in all, I agree with the rest of the posters here. The show did kind of exploit the children.

21. Yeah, but...
He left it to the stepfather to make sure she wasn't alone with the children again. The stepfather admitted to using the stick on the children, as well as kicking them with his steel-toed boots. I was horrified to see Dr. Shithead leave it up to HIM instead of calling CPS immediately. He had a legal obligation to call CPS and did NOT do so. I imagine he was innundated with scathing letters.

29. Hmmmm...check this out
From his website:

Some viewers have raised questions about whether the Dr. Phil show reported Jim and Karen to the authorities after the taping of this show. Other viewers have expressed surprise that Karen and Jim's children were allowed to go home with them after the show.

Please be assured that immediately following the taping of "A Mother's Rage," the Dr. Phil show did make a report to local child protection authorities. As a mental health professional, Dr. Phil is required by law to make such a report if he has concerns about the safety, welfare or well being of a child. However, Dr. Phil does not himself have the authority to remove children from their parents' home.

Remember that a lot happens after the taping of a show that TV viewers never get to see. Dr. Phil's staff draws on a vast network of experts and mental health professionals to help Dr. Phil guests. Karen's family is just one of many to have received this assistance.

13. Remember who is at home at the time this show airs...
Edited on Mon May-08-06 08:57 PM by misternormal
Certainly not the hard working moms of the working poor... Mostly members of the junior league who have just come home from a hair appointment and getting their nails done...

This shit sells the time for commercial spots... Makes the producers a ton of cash...

And the reason this show was on now and not in a couple of weeks, was NOT as he said... "I wanted you here now to get some help"...

The truth is: The media is in the May Book right now... ratings... sweeps... call 'em what you want... the higher the ratings now, the more they can charge for commercial time until the next book.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is what it's all about.

(Not to mention that a lot of people watch this show like they watch soap operas, so they can feel assured that their lives are not as bad as some.)

23. Nothing is worse than Jerry Springer Show
I don't give a rats' ass what adults do. It was totally unacceptable that kids were subjected to this.F*ck may sweeps. The line has to be drawn somewhere. They worry about janice jackson's boob and allow this to be aired? What are the kids going to do when they return to school? Some friends mother/teacher must have seen this.Could the kids sue when they turn 18?

28. Hey -- I'm a Stay at home Mom and I resent that!
I haven't gotten my nails done in years and I am NOT a member of the junior league. Let's leave the stereotyping to the GOP. Think before you type!

And just so you know, I do NOT watch Dr. Phil nor do I watch soap operas. When I can get a little break in, I go here and other political blogs to stay informed.
