Since they can't run on their own records of failure, their plan is to smear Democrats. This is probably going to be one of the ugliest elections in history. I sure hope people are smart enough to know better this time around.

The Bush administration's spending splurge and growing public antagonism toward the war make it hard for GOP candidates to gain political points by arguing that Democrats would overspend or abandon Iraq.
But they can contend that Democrats have no program to deal with national problems and would mainly investigate the policies of the past six years. One potential GOP poster child: Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, who has filed a resolution seeking to create a bipartisan committee to determine if grounds exist for “possible impeachment” of Mr. Bush. He would chair the House Judiciary Committee in a Democratic House.
As much as the public disapproves of Mr. Bush, there's no real sign it wants him impeached.
An all-out Republican assault on Democrats won't be a pretty sight. It may not work. But unless things improve noticeably in Iraq, Republicans may have little choice if they hope to avoid the return of a Democratic majority in at least one house of Congress.
