Columnist calling for assault on Democratic candidates as only way to win
Since they can't run on their own records of failure, their plan is to smear Democrats. This is probably going to be one of the ugliest elections in history. I sure hope people are smart enough to know better this time around.

The Bush administration's spending splurge and growing public antagonism toward the war make it hard for GOP candidates to gain political points by arguing that Democrats would overspend or abandon Iraq.

But they can contend that Democrats have no program to deal with national problems and would mainly investigate the policies of the past six years. One potential GOP poster child: Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, who has filed a resolution seeking to create a bipartisan committee to determine if grounds exist for “possible impeachment” of Mr. Bush. He would chair the House Judiciary Committee in a Democratic House.

As much as the public disapproves of Mr. Bush, there's no real sign it wants him impeached.

An all-out Republican assault on Democrats won't be a pretty sight. It may not work. But unless things improve noticeably in Iraq, Republicans may have little choice if they hope to avoid the return of a Democratic majority in at least one house of Congress.

1. The GOP are sorry suckers who should all be tarred and
feathered after what they've done to this country. Many of the GOP agree.

2. I fear that too many House elections will be "local"
The failure of the Bush administration needs to be the focal point of many campaigns, IMHO.

3. Sounds like business as usual
the John Conyers is seeking impeachment meme is what they really seem to be pushing, maybe that's why some Dems are shying away from it, or "all in good time"

4. The only reason the general public does not want him impeached
Is that they have no clue about the extent of his crimes. It's not like the average dumbass American is posting on DU. They only know what the media tells them, which is nothing.

Once an investigation starts, the people will want him impeached. Right now, they just believe Bush is incompetent. They have no idea how evil he really is.

5. How stupid are they going to look. With a 30% approval rating of their
"leader," and many go-piggies waiting until the approval ratings to drop before running for the hills to get away from the shrub, and with the list of atrocities that the American people are sick of, do they honestly think a smear campaign will really raise their approval ratings much higher? Maybe a few points for those stupid enough to believe the lies and smears, but there is enough anger now that I believe a larger majority of people won't make the same mistake of falling for the go-piggies smear tactics and lies again. I doubt the swiftboating will work this time around. People know they were duped and are fairly pissed about it. Hence the 1/3 backwash approval rating.

7. "If thy right hand offend thee..."
Republican Christians will gladly cut off their right arms (Bush and the executive branch) if it subverts their chances for re-election, for surely that will offend them. Thankfully, I think it will be too little too late for any hope of the redemption of their political careers.
