So Bruce Willis' goes the George W. Bush route...
Edited on Tue May-09-06 08:37 AM by MessiahRp
Remember this is the guy who flew over Iraq in a helicopter and declared the place safe and said the media was lying about how bad the war was.

from IMDB.com's Movie & TV News:

Willis' News Strike

Hollywood actor Bruce Willis has slammed the media for its poor news coverage, accusing the industry of deliberately ignoring serious news in favor of racy stories. The Die Hard star, who credits his youthful energy and vigor to a refusal to watch news bulletins, is disgusted with the news reports, claiming they are frivolous and superficial rather than informative. And he says that banning news from his house means he worries far less. Willis insists, "We go for the sensational now in the news. If it's not sensational or tantalizing or making fun of someone, it seldom gets into the news. I don't watch the news anyway. I have it turned off, and I feel so much better for it. That's why I have that youthful glow about me. I don't look worried."

Don't watch the news, don't read the papers... whatever keeps your fantasies of reality alive Bruce. What an idiot. That's a Republican for ya though.... He is right about the sensationalism of journalism but I suspect he is tuning out because they are telling him how bad Iraq and his buddy's Presidency are going.

However, while his side was on the winning end he said otherwise.

15. Just to add some info...
Here's some links to support my stance on Willis:

Willis to make pro-Iraq War movie

ANGERED by negative portrayals of the conflict in Iraq, Bruce Willis, the Hollywood star, is to make a pro-war film in which American soldiers will be depicted as brave fighters for freedom and democracy.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-1892675_1,00.html

-------

The American Enterprise (RW shills) raved about him: http://www.taemag.com/issues/articleID.17729/article_detail.asp

-----------

Fox News actually whines for the plight of Willis and other Pro-Bush celebs who apparently are getting screwed because they agree with Shrub.

I don't think he's bright, but has a certain type of roll he embodies very well.

i dont know hte rest of the article, i didnt go in ot be honest. but the piece about the news is a reality. he is right. it is bullshit. how many times a day do we say on this board turn off the news. i did oct 2004 and i am better off for it. i am not uninformed. and i am better off for it. the news is no longer the news

and i understand he is now ridiculing bushco and what he has done to the point of insisting he is not a repug

he went onto letterman with a make up job being shot in the face by a shot gun, pellets everywhere

unless the article is otherwising stating it, i think willis is on our side now. he has also stated we need to help america, help the poor the ill the needy.

9. Well, when it comes to the American news media...
Edited on Tue May-09-06 08:43 AM by Spider Jerusalem
he has something of a point; that's the reason I get all of my news from print media and not television, and my main news sources are the Guardian and BBC. Anyone whose primary news source is the mainstream American TV news is going to be poorly informed, and is going to have a very skewed perception of what's actually going on in the world (thanks to the relative weight the US media give to sensationalist stories about missing blonde girls, random acts of violence, and celebrity scandals as opposed to international affairs and other more serious topics. American television news is designed to entertain and titllate as much as it is to inform).

10. I don't know....I'm conflicted on this guy...
Yeah, I know he's tagged as a republican, and he's talked about issues on which he clearly leans right. But I've read interviews where he also talks about how things have gone wrong under this administration, and also how he does feel it's governments job to help the poor and disenfranchised in this country. I'm not going to defend him per se since he's made a lot of stupid statements. But I think overall he's no more or less uninformed than the average joe in America, and he probably only leans slightly to the right rather than being the hardcore wingnut he sometimes gets tagged with on here.

I do respect that he has a very good relationship with his ex-wife and her much younger husband. Silly as it seems I think that tends to indicate a fairly mature and intelligent outlook on life as a person.

I'll get flamed for this response, but whatever.

I gave up reading local newspapers several years ago because every day there was some horrific tale about some toddler being maimed by his mother, brutal rapes, child molesters, some mentally disturbed person smashing a stranger in the head with a brick, people being pushed off the subway platform, you name it. That we know the world is full of evil, depravity, horror does not mean we need to see it or hear it every single day to care, or do want to do something about it. Most tabloids are just sensationalistic reporting at its finest to titillate the subway rider. My peace of mind improved when I wasn't sickened every single morning by the slice of humanity the newspaper was choosing to present to me every day. Side by side with this look at horror and abuse every day were cheap advertisements and celebrity gossip. Buried in there somewhere was the occasional hard news story.

Television news got the boot a few years ago for similar reasons, plus the vacuous coiffed heads that had replaced real journalists.

I still read the occasional news magazine. And I'm not pulling a Barbara Bush "my beautiful mind" or a Bruce Willis "youthful glow", but there are many benefits to tuning out "traditional" news reporting. I stay informed, certainly: I get my news from a variety of hand-picked news sites of my own choosing, plus the excellent coverage here at DU. :)

Willis may be a lousy actor, he may even be a lousy human being, but he's right on the money about slamming the media.

You have to be picky if you want to know what's going on. The only reason to watch TV news is voyeurism. I get my news from the Net, radio and the Weather Channel. And even the Weather Channel is 'way too sensationalist.....

30. No, he's full of shit
He spoke at the 2000 Republican convention, in support of Bush. No one, but no one, who had the first clue as to what the Republican party was about at that time (or George Bush's fitness to manage anything more important than the auto dept at a Walmart) would've thrown their lot in with them, unless he was okay with bellicose jingoism, theocratic authoritarianism, social Darwinism, and all the other malignant impulses that were clear since at least the days of Gingrich. Harry Browne was the perfect match for his purported views and he didn't say squat to support the man. Willis is spinning excuses for his willful ignorance.

40. True, it doesn't seem he supports Bush anymore
But I won't extend him a pass for his Bush enthusiasm or backing the Republican party -- he was publicly posing with Dubya as late as 2003. It's been crystal clear that Republicans were morphing into the John Birch Society by the time Reagan was elected, well over 20 years ago! A self-professed Libertarian can get away with excusing his Republican vote as being for the lesser of 2 evils, but no Libertarian would stump for Dubya like Willis has done.

Edited on Tue May-09-06 09:08 AM by Montauk6
We've got mainstream news outlets up the ying-yang, yet if it weren't for alternatives such as BBC, Democracy Now (which I'm sure Mr. Willis watches daily, yeah right), the Internet, we'd REALLY be left in the dark. But, hey, at least we'd know who got voted off the island or who got slammed by Simon or what Paris listens to on her iPod.

But Brucie had better be careful 'cuz it's that serious news coverage he craves so much that's gonna string his boy up.

29. The mentality of W. (and Willis too, I guess)
was beautifully summed up this weekend in the New York Times Magazine article about contraception. A fundy pharamacist/legislator from Illinois was confronted with some data that contradicted his prejudice. His response? "I'm going to understand it my way." That man just wrote W's epitaph.

People that dont' watch movies because of the political leanings of the actors, are just silly... I expect that narrow minded BS from right-wingers, but unfortunately it seems there are plenty of wing-nuts on our end of the spectrum.
