17. Yes, Birch Bayh led succesful Senate rejections of two horrible Nixonian
Supreme Court appointments. His mother was a fine person, too. I keep hoping that genes and upbringing will prevail and that Evan will become half the Senator that his father was.

18. Not just DLC
Remember, he was the idiot who shit his pants over the Dean insurgency, snarking about "leftists taking over" the party. Dean, a onetime DLCer, a self-professed centrist who managed to inspire the rabid devotion of a shitload of the so-called "liberal purists." A fucking miracle. You'd expect a sensible DLCer would want to examine that and broaden his base, but no, fucking Bayh was inspired to create another Third Way offshoot, with yet another redcarpet invitation for dyspeptic Republicans to join his movement.

19. I grew to dislike him right after the election. Saw him on "Road
to the White House" and a little old lady stood up and said (paraphrasing) "All that you say and promise, what does it matter, if the republicans have highjacked the voting machines?" Bayh, then went on and on about he does not believe or support the notion that there was any machine tampering or fraud. Like it was a freakin "conspiracy theory"

24. Yup
Bayh is just another empty suit. Everyone is a natural-born Republican and his job is to cadge votes by convincing them they won't sully themselves by voting for a nice, "sensible" Democrat. Fuck him.

12. He's won several statewide elections in an extremely Red state.
Edited on Tue May-09-06 10:17 AM by Old Crusoe
Served as Secretary of State, Governor, and Senator in Indiana.

He has raised a pile of money for the 08 presidential race and like his father before him, is expected to be a contender for one of the top places in the field for the Iowa caucus.

He gave the Key Note Address at the Democratic Convention in 2000. With Bayh on the ticket, red Indiana might become a much more competitive state for the Democrats.

His wife is also an attorney, a good one; they met at a law firm in Indianapolis. They have (I think) 2 twin sons.

I'm not hogwild about his votes in key issues and don't really think he's a good speaker, but others disagree with me. In any case, he will be a formidable opponent for Senator Clinton in Iowa, despite her cash advantage.

20. hell that's all we need. And then the whole thing will be a
terrible, terrible mistake AGAIN and DINOs will be regretting their vote to support in 08. But hell, I bet you a million The Idiot will bomb Iran without asking anyone. Or, more like the other rumor - he will get Isreal to do it instead.

I am just afraid whoever wins the nominations will pick him - to bring Indiana blue.

21. The priority is sadly to get as many blue seats
And it is likely that a number of Dinos will be added to the mix even though they have supported Bush for so long. Then again once the Democrats will get a majority, it is a big chance that they will follow the party lead and hopefully not vote with the GOP all the time.

Actually I doubt as well whether Bush will ask for permission this time and conventional bombing is more likely, however Bayh has played the Iran game already and I don't know how crazy Bush really is, because he has done so many outrageous things already like Katrina that I don't think that he cares about anybody or anything but himself and that's what makes the fool so dangerous.

16. His father was the real deal!
It is true that Evan has been elected in a very red state. In fact, I do not think he has ever lost an election in this state. It is also true that he is a nice guy and his wife is a wonderful lady. That being said, Evan has been preparing for the presidency his entire life. Every political decision he has made has always had that goal in mind. I know many Democrats in Indiana that refer to Evan as our "other" Republican Senator. He and Hillary share some of the qualities when it comes to political expediency over political conviction. At the end of the day, if he is our candidate, I will support him.

22. He's Midwestern
and, yes, I'm biased since I grew up in the great state of Illinois. (have now lived longer in Atlanta, Georgia than Illinois - yikes!)
BUT I think a Midwesterner would be a good choice as a presidential candidate. Not as "scary" as those northeastern liberals -- who are so frightening to Southerners. "Ted Kennedy" is synonymous with the devil down here.
Midwesterners, whether true of not, are perceived as less elitist.
Plus, we're God's chosen people.

25. About Bayh.
I met Evan Bayh in the 90's when he keynoted the Kansas Democratic Party State Convention. Very nice guy, very intelligent, very charismatic, and honest.

Is he a liberal? Well, he's elected in very conservative Indiana, what would you expect? Of course, he's quite conservative. People call him a DINO. That's probably an apt description, but he is not conservative on all issues. But he is likely politically right of most people here. That's what it takes for a Democrat to win statewide office in Indiana. A more liberal Democrat would likely not be a US Senator in Indiana.

So, stop carping about his somewhat more conservative voting record. We're very lucky to have Evan Bayh. He adds one more to the D column. In November, he'll be part of the new Senate majority. Without him, there would likely not be a Democratic Senate majority.

Oh. And did I say that he was a very nice guy, and honest, too?
