1. Was that the letter
where he asked when Bush was going to act like a Christian and follow the teachings of Jesus? I don't think that's looney at all-I only wish Bush would follow that advice!

3. Let us not forget this is the same Iran types that have the death
penalty for gays. I don't understand the message here from some. Is it "my enemy's enemy is my friend?" and we should consider this murdering nut case our friend because he hates Bush?

11. Welcome to DU
I think you're right. This is an important point to remember. Even most Iranians hate the oppresssion brought about by the Iranian government.

23. Then it is up to them to find the fortitude to do something
just like Iraq I don't hear anyone asking us to come liberate them.

27. I agree
I think there are things we can do, including more support for broadcasting persian language television into Iran to inform them, but invade? bomb? I'm not for that.

13. 'Think for yourself' is our message.
The Iranian president rightly (IMHO) faults Bush for the Iraq war debacle and the lies about WMDs. However, he also supports religous fundamentalism as does Bush. We here at DU find both Bush's wedding of fundamentalist views and public policy and the Iranian theocratic governing model disturbing and undemocratic.

28. No, it's more like
maybe we should think twice about NUKING him? No one here is condoning Ahmadinejad's human rights record or calling him a friend.

But I suppose there are only 2 ways of looking at things - right? You're either with us or against us...

4. Again, they conveniently don't mention the last few paragraphs
...of Ah'm-Mad's letter.

Liberalism and Western style democracy have not been able to help realize the ideals of humanity. Today these two concepts have failed. Those with insight can already hear the sounds of the shattering and fall of the ideology and thoughts of the liberal democratic systems.

We increasingly see that people around the world are flocking towards a main focal point – that is the Almighty God. Undoubtedly through faith in God and the teachings of the prophets, the people will conquer their problems. My question for you is: “Do you not want to join them?”

Mr President,

Whether we like it or not, the world is gravitating towards faith in the Almighty and justice and the will of God will prevail over all things.

He and Bush** actually have a lot of common ground -- the desire to destroy democracy and liberalism by undermining the separation of church and state.

He is a nut case in Iran.

17. I don't think anyone's
saying that anyway. Some of what he says about B*sh is correct, that doesn't mean I agree with everything he says. Nor does it mean that Democrats somehow support him.

Let's face it - B*sh is at 65% DISapproval in America and probably 85% worldwide - he's gonna get a lot of criticism from all quarters. The people who criticise B*sh don't necessarily have anything in common.

19. Right
And it's key to remember the last paragraphs. It reminds me of so much from comedy. Someone gets up on a podium..

"We all are hard working people and care about each other!"
*crowd murmurs in agreement*
"Our way, is one of love, and acceptance!"
*crowd nods and murmurs in agreement*
"We're not out to hurt anyone!"
*crowd nods and murmurs in agreement while a man in the crowd shouts out 'that's right!*
"So that's why we have to go and kill all the jews!"
*silence...crickets chirping...cut to audience mouths gaping wide.*

Essentially this was the letter.

"Mr. President don't you think the sky is pretty at sunset? I do. Don't you think it's wrong to drink and drive? I think it's wrong, so do you. See? We have much in common. I like dogs, I keep one as a pet, though my wife jokes that my dog keeps me. Ha Ha. See Mr. President? Are we not alike in many ways? Wouldn't you also agree therefore that your entire system of government is a failure and that the United States would be better off converting to Islam and coming under our rule? Since we agree on sunset's and dogs, I figured...I mean really, how far a stretch from that to this, eh Mr. President?"

21. I certainly agree with you, as do most here.
But whether we like it or not, our nut case is far more dangerous at this juncture than Iran's. Bush** has the will, the ability and the hubris to start what no sane person wants. All indicators are pointing to him doing just that. I'm deeply concerned that nothing will turn him from this disastrous course.

22. "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" is very Republican
and its actually what got us into this mess in the first place.

Remember back in the 80s when the Reagan administration helped fund and train some "freedom fighters" in Afghanistan to fight the Soviets?

Wonder what became of them????

29. Friend or enemy is irrelevant
What matters is results, and results are best accomplished through diplomacy. Should we invade Iran because Iranian law has the death penalty for gays? Because the Iranian record on women's rights is atrocious?

5. Wonkette thinks it aligns with the "looney left" and the fundy right.
Edited on Tue May-09-06 02:06 PM by CottonBear
Of course Wonkette is nothing more than a digital gossip columnist, so who really gives a crap what she thinks. (She is mostly amusing.) But, "Iran agrees with the looney left" is the line that's being put out there today.

For putting American in a position where a whack-job like Ahmadinejad can lecture us on morals -- and be on the side of the angels.

25. The point is is that Iran has made a diplomatic gesture
and our SOS gave our response without even reading the whole letter. It's obvious what our intended path is.

If Junior would meet with his enemies, domestic and international, and listen to them--the world would be a much safer place.
