The US Senate is not a kindergarten |
|
Alito's family needs to grow the hell up. He's up for a lifetime appointment for a position that will shape the lives of millions of Americans thru the coming generations. His folks had two months to prepare themselves for the questioning and pressures of the hearings. Mrs. Alito's (or whatever she calls herself) behavior was immature and petty for the spouse of a federal judge. Frankly, I think she owes the Judicary Committee an apology (If someone brought their wife to a job interview for me, and she left crying, I would be likewise put off).
I'm reminded of Tom Hanks' line in A League of Their Own: "There is no crying in Baseball!" And if I had been at the hearings today, I would have been very tempted to say the equivalent of that to Mrs. Alito.
Personally, I'm saving my tears for the servicemen who die in Iraq on a daily basis and the individuals who will be denied Medicare coverage and benefits b/c of the new budget cuts.

1. Considering what tinhorn tyrants some judges can be |
|
In their courtroom demeanor, it's refreshing to see them on the receiving end once in a while.

5. Ah! That explains Keith Olbermann's line on Countdown |
|
He said, "There's no crying in the Senate." I didn't realize it was a baseball analogy.

7. The first time he said it, actually, |
|
he was referring to George Voinovich in the John Bolton hearings.

6. I missed that..but what I want to know is, |
|
why the hell is the family there anyway? I don't take my frickin' family to a job interview.
Have SC nomination hearings always been like this...or is this something new?

Was John Roberts family in the hearings? I don't remember since I didn't really watch much of them. I got all my info from AAR or here. They did have younger kids than the Alito's.

They have to get used to the idea that this is the Supreme Court nomination we're talking about here, not lawn darts. The future of the country is at stake. Stop whining.

9. I think in the real world, none of us are expected to bring our |
|
spouses to the job interview and actually we are discouraged. Meeting the wife or husband is usually a dinner party sort of thing not a hearing. I wonder why they made her come?

10. She has no business there anyway. |

Wasn't she already present for the photo op when the chimp made his announcement? She's added nothing to the proceedings - sitting there behind him wearing some of the ugliest, most garish clothing imaginable and smirking like an idiot. Then she hears Graham's predictable defense of her husband and gets all emotional - again, on camera. My God, if she felt tears coming on, she should have politely left the room and let loose in a stall in the ladies' room.
Either the episode was completely staged, in which case she's a tool, or she has no sense of decorum and should have stayed the hell home.
