NYTimes Editors NOT at all impressed with Alito
The hearings may be short on fireworks, but they have produced, through Judge Alito's words, an array of reasons to be concerned about this nomination.

January 12, 2006
Editorial

Judge Alito, in His Own Words

Some commentators are complaining that Judge Samuel Alito Jr.'s confirmation hearings have not been exciting, but they must not have been paying attention. We learned that Judge Alito had once declared that Judge Robert Bork - whose Supreme Court nomination was defeated because of his legal extremism - "was one of the most outstanding nominees" of the 20th century. We heard Judge Alito refuse to call Roe v. Wade "settled law," as Chief Justice John Roberts did at his confirmation hearings. And we learned that Judge Alito subscribes to troubling views about presidential power.

Those are just a few of the quiet bombshells that have dropped. In his deadpan bureaucrat's voice, Judge Alito has said some truly disturbing things about his view of the law. In three days of testimony, he has given the American people reasons to be worried - and senators reasons to oppose his nomination. Among those reasons are the following:

Excellent summary of issues follows ...

No punches pulled in this one; they just Alito whack himself, time and time again, with his own words ...

Peace.

4. Well, any time they try to repent is helpful given how far and wide ...
... their "ink" spreads.

I don't dig'um, but an editorial like that is really helpful just now and we need all the help we can muster.

Peace.

24. But they are IMPURE!!! Don't you understand, they're IMPURE!!!
You're right, of course. I have little use for the Times, but they do have considerable influence and they are right on this, so if they can give some senators cover to oppose Alito, that's a good thing.

Edited on Thu Jan-12-06 06:23 AM by Surya Gayatri
do we have that is remotely credible? The NYT is still one of the "newspapers of reference", its recent checkered past not withstanding. SG

8. "... and lots of people read this paper!" Yes. And, this particular ...
... editorial is succinct and nails Alito with his own words.

It's an easy item to spread far and wide and that's just what everyone should be doing in the next 24 hours.

Thank you!

Peace.

30. The assassination of David Rosenbaum, NYT journalist
David Rosenbaum, a reporter and editor for the New York Times, died as a result of a head injury allegedly received when he was mugged in his upper-scale neighborhood in Washington. Problems with this:...

http://www.xymphora.blogspot.com/
http://www.haloscan.com/comments/andy8/113687947384619953/
read Xymphora's links to MSM - they know and are mad.

="Rosenbaum's last piece for the TIMES was published on 12/24/2005, and reported that Samuel Alito had authored a 1984 memo arguing that then-President Reagan had the right to order wiretaps without warrants.
http://select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=F30C12F83E540C778EDDAB0994DD404482

Rosenbaum was mugged to death two weeks later, as Alito's confirmation hearings are about to begin?

Small world, isn't it? And full of odd coincidences.A lot of unknowns remain regarding this story. It very well may have been a "legitimate" mugging...a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Then again, it may have been a "message" to the NYT."

19. I'm Actually in Agreement with the NY Times Editors...
I'm not at all impressed with Alito, either.

His answers were empty. He dodged each Democrat question and his song & dance was nil & void.

The question remains: Will all the Republicans lock-step vote for this empty, shill?

Why don't their headlines reflect the editorial views?

They have become marginalized by fence straddling.

31. Crooks and Liars has part of answer - "Brian Williams: NRO-Rent Boy"
Brian Williams was so courageous after Katrina and they must really have made him an offer he couldn't refuse to be as terrified as this:

"Brian Williams, the main man for NBC news joined Don Imus this morning and was talking about the Alito nomination when the subject of Joe Biden came up. Brian couldn't pimp the NRO quick enough in his response to Don-and to top it all off he didn't even know WTF he was talking about.

Don looked as surprised as I did with his response-you'll see here.
emailer GT: Williams said with these bloggers now you have to be on your toes. Joe Biden made a point about his daughters and ivy league schools and then the National Review...

Video-WMP Video-QT (rough transcript)

Imus: Well what was the issue.

Williams: Well, he (Biden) was talking about Ivy league schools at the hearings and the National Review had video refuting what he said with an earlier statement. I mean this Joe Biden thing was just UNBELIEVABLE! (emphasis by Brian Williams).

Imus: Well what did he (Biden) say about Ivy league schools initially?

Williams: Well, um..., I am not sure exactly but whatever point he had the National Review put up an immediate counterpoint.

Imus: Counterpoint to what?

Williams: Well, I am sorry. I don't have that. Maybe you can get your crack staff over there to find it out.

Imus: Well, geez, you have just completely lost... us here this morning.

Yes Brian, you should have taken your own advice and stayed on your toes. Why is Williams quoting the NRO at all? Media Matters has noted his proclivity to shill for the Republican party, I mean who can forget his "ode" to Rush Limbaugh, but this was beyond the pale. So far this week
has turned into one big circle jerk of republican talking points for Alito and the fact that Brian Williams brought up the NRO as a resource tool without even knowing the story seals the deal. "

20. Well they DID destroy the chances of the Patriot Act's renewal
At least for six months anyway (though I'll bet the political climate will be even less favorable for the Patriot Act six months from now). Yeah, they sat on the "Bush spying on Americans" story for a year, but I think it made a much bigger splash when it was finally put out (timed to beat down the Patriot Act) then it would have a year ago. Back then people would've just kinda shrugged and said "well, we gotta fight the terrorists..." Hell, even now the polls indicate half of Americans don't think there is anything wrong with warrantless illegal wiretaps of American citizens. That ought to tell you how high the stakes are and why the NYT might have taken a strategic approach against the Bush Administration.

25. And, it looks like Alito will say anything to get a job. It sounds like he
made assurances to Feinstein in a private meeting about a woman's right to choose, yet it is clear that Republican senators got different "assurances". Who is he telling the truth to? I whuld have to believe that his beliefs reflect the very unpopular WH resident who nominated him. Alito must go down. I hope they hit him hard on CAP today, Demand the records of the group. They can't claim "state secrets" on that!
