GOP Group to Donate Abramoff-Related Funds...$500,000!!!!!!!!!
Edited on Thu Jan-12-06 07:47 AM by in_cog_ni_to
Mitt Romney, Chairman of the REPUBLICAN Governors Association is covering his ASS. The association received a $500,000 contribution from a company owned by Michael Scanlon. I wonder if Romney would have returned the money if this REPUBLICAN scandal had never seen the light of day?

GOP Group to Donate Abramoff-Related Funds

By GLEN JOHNSON
The Associated Press
Thursday, January 12, 2006; 3:21 AM

BOSTON -- Days after calling on his party to exhibit higher ethical standards, the chairman of the Republican Governors Association said his group will donate to charity $500,000 in campaign contributions linked to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.<snip>

<snip>

The Republican Governors Association received the $500,000 in October 2002 from a public affairs company owned by Michael Scanlon, Abramoff's business partner.

Scanlon, like Abramoff, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges as part of a federal probe of influence peddling on Capitol Hill. President Bush, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert _ all Republicans _ have already given charities sums equal to donations they received from Abramoff or his associates.

Nationally known groups including the Salvation Army and American Heart Association as well as organizations such as shelter for battered women in Colorado, will share more than $430,000 in now-unwanted campaign contributions from Abramoff and his associates.<snip>

1. How in the hell do these assholes think that clears them of wrong doing
They still took the money originally, they still gave Abramoff favors in exchange for the money. It is still wrong.
They are still corrupt and giving the money to charity does nothing to exonerate these bastards.

Only jail will suffice.

2. Can you imagine the agnst and tears as these guys were
debating giving back the money. They'd probably rather sacrifice their first-born child then give it back.

8. Even when you donate a bribe... it was still a BRIBE and it doesn't make
it any less so.

If it was a legal donation donating it looks a bit "odd" although I suppose that I can sort of understand not wanting the tainted money. OTOH if any politician wants to cleanse him or her self of this type of money I'd be happy to help them by accepting it... I can put it towards our higher property/school taxes and increasing home heating fuel costs.

10. BTW, it's being returned - in INSTALLMENT PAYMENTS
Not kidding you - they'll probably just donate $1k/month for the next 500 months so they can at least claim they are returning it

Who Is Giving Away Jack Abramoff's Money?

By ELIZABETH WHITE, Associated Press Writer Thu Jan 5, 2:54 PM ET
