DAYum! Them Dixie Chicks is some Uppity Women!
There they are on 60 Minutes with a new album after 3 years and 5 babies.

Steve Croft: "It may be a clever marketing ploy or it may be career suicide." Stay tuned!

Natalie Mains made it pretty clear:
-that they make music they need to make for themselves without basing musical decisions on what other people think about it
-that she's never claimed to be "country to the core" and has diverse musical influences
-that they needed to make this record (and address the * brouhaha in a song) to get past it
-that a priority for her is honesty
-that she thinks it's "stupid" that saying she was "ashamed the President is from my state" was such a big deal
-that she understands why DJs "in the corporate world" would refuse to play their music ("why should they stand up for us?") for fear of losing their jobs
-that she is down-to-earth and speaks her mind

UPPITY!

Isn't it great that some successful, talented, beautiful, creative, happy women have come out of hiding to give *lovers something to hate while they ignore all that *Co has done?

60 Minutes shot of flag-waver in a "BUSH ROCKS" Tshirt.

Sorry Dude. Bush does not ROCK.

DIXIE CHICKS ROCK :yourock:

Whether Colbert or Natalie, doesn't make much difference. As long as voices continue to speak out.

Interesting that she didn't mention Clear Channel. Does she really think it reflects management decisions at individual stations?

And they may have lost their "fan base" but they've earned a heck of a lot more than the drooling idiocy of narrow minded bigots who want them to "shut up and sing."

I'm a fan.

7. As far as losing their fan base goes, the album they released....
...while all that crap was going on went to #1. I believe they also had a single that went to #1, too.

I don't think they've lost any of their fan base...I think that's what the rightwing media wants us to believe.

By the way...Krofft, the 60 Minutes interviewer...was a complete horse's ass. IMHO, he did everything he could to make the Chicks look bad. He failed.

20. Steve Kroft was abomininable, and didn't have the facts
Edited on Mon May-15-06 02:44 AM by VolcanoJen
He mentioned that the Chicks committed "career suicide." He didn't mention that after the ridiculous flap over Natalie's relatively benign comment, they went on to sell out just about every date on their 2003 North American tour, in the height of pro-war frenzy.

He also said that after the flap, everything was "falling apart" for the Chicks. By whose yardstick? They looked far from unhappy and in the throes of poverty to me.

:wtf:

He cited that the Dixie Chicks had a #1 internet download single, but that they were sinking on the country single charts. Who the hell goes into a record store and buys a single these days, anyway? Isn't having a #1 ITunes song pretty indicative of mega-success in the modern recording industry era? Does he have even the first clue about the way record sales work in the modern world?

:wtf:

He was as sanctimonious as Diane Sawyer was when she interviewed the Chicks just after the "comment."

Kroft was indeed a horse's ass. He practically tried to demonize Natalie Maines all over again.

10. I am not a country fan, but the Dixie Chicks ROCK.
That was a great interview. They STILL are sticking to thier guns. I most enjoyed that one of the Chicks said that observed and embraced that "their" audience was progressive, not like the usual "rednecks".

That statement made my weekend.

I might consider buying their new release, it sounded more like crossover anyway.

18. "Not Ready To Make Nice" by The Dixie Chicks
"Not Ready To Make Nice"

Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I'm not sure I could.
They say time heals everything,
But I'm still waiting
I'm through, with doubt,
There's nothing left for me to figure out,
I've paid a price, and I'll keep paying
I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should
I know you said
Why can't you just get over it,
It turned my whole world around
and I kind of like it
I made my bed, and I sleep like a baby,
With no regrets and I don't mind saying,
It's a sad sad story
That a mother will teach her daughter
that she ought to hate a perfect stranger.
And how in the world
Can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they'd write me a letter
Saying that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over
I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should
I'm not ready to make nice,
I'm not ready to back down,
I'm still mad as hell
And I don't have time
To go round and round and round
It's too late to make it right
I probably wouldn't if I could
Cause I'm mad as hell
Can't bring myself to do what it is
You think I should
Forgive, sounds good.
Forget, I'm not sure I could.
They say time heals everything,
But I'm still waiting

22. Steve Croft Is An Ass
I like real country music - not that Nashville shit - and I've liked a lot of the Dixie Chicks's music. Even if I didn't, I'd still go out and buy some of their work after seeing that miserable interview with that idiot. Yes, they don't get much play on Corporate Radio (a lot of fine country musicians that I bet even the most hard-core self-proclaimed country music hater would actually like can't get played on Corporate Country radio, but that's another rant) and yet their albums do well, they tour constantly and their single is the #1 download where people choose what they want to hear and PAY FOR IT! Gee, maybe when people are given a choice what to listen to, they want to choose something that isn't in heavy rotation but is actually well-written and performed by real musicians.

They were amazingly gracious to the dimwitted reporter, and depsite his best efforts, they came across as intelligent, rational people. Which of course they are!

23. Instant Chick-O-Nalysis:
1. While Clear Channel stations were busy bulldozing Dixie Chicks CDs, banning them from their playlists and airing phone calls from flag-sucking half-wits who somehow had forgotten that entertainment figures had said way worse shit about Clinton EVERY DAY, Clear Channel's promotional arm was busy booking Dixie Chicks concerts and raking in the profits.

2. The lack of chart success of "Not Ready To Make Nice" really needs to be discussed in light of the fact that the song does not SOUND Country. It's a rather radical departure from what consumers EXPECT the Chicks to sound like. "There's Your Trouble," in other words.

3. The Dixie Chicks were able to bring Sony Music to heel over a contract dispute. Steve Croft, 60 Minutes and/or CBS ain't jackshit up beside that.

4. The Dixie Chicks are bigger than Nashville. May Chet Atkins suck on THAT in the Great Beyond.

27. What is success?
A songwriter friend once said to me, "Do you have any idea how much money you make if you've got a song in the Top 100?

With an album at #43, with writing credits and royalties, most of us could retire happily. And the Chicks are still on the way up!

They sing, they play, they take no shit...:loveya:

31. I wonder who writes Lesley Stahl's questions?
It seemed to me that asking them if they all agreed with Natalie Manes statements was a typical divide and conquer strategy. I mean if your going to pose naked on a magazine cover together with rebellious words written on your body, logic tells me, they are all in agreement.

I have not listened much to their music in the past but I will have to make a point of buying their latest C.D.

I'll buy their CD when I have time. And anyone who hasn't gotten Pink's latest, she's in top form with a great song on topic with, well, every post on this whole board. Buy it, listen to it.

PINK LYRICS

"Dear Mr. President"
(feat. Indigo Girls)

Dear Mr. President
Come take a walk with me
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep
What do you feel when you look in the mirror
Are you proud

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why

Dear Mr. President
Were you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
How can you say
No child is left behind
We're not dumb and we're not blind
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye

Let me tell you bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night
How do you walk with your head held high
Dear Mr. President
You'd never take a walk with me
Would you
