Grey in auras signals excessive energy being burnt off.
it is also a lifting of intense fear or some life-threatening situation
A person who's life-force is leaking away due to unhappiness, sadness, depression, or illness.
With the color black a person with advanced cancer.
Only used during a healing when excessive energy must be removed because the person can't handle it.

.. how can you see the aura from a picture (or see it at all for that matter)? It this only something that is visible to a trained eye or just enlightened individuals?

and the only time I've seen this before was a close friend who had colin cancer. Everything about him was 'grey' even the room. When I saw this pic it immediately reminded me of what I felt when I saw my friend that day.

As far a auras go.
Kirlian photography measures the electromagnetic energy field.
