Bird Flu Masks now available to the public!
http://birdfluprotection.com/

Available in five colors. It's like wearing a pretty beak. Sorry, not available in child size.

Bird Flu Protection

Bird Flu Masks (NanoMasks) have filters with nanoparticles that have been proven to be highly effective in eradicating viruses and bacteria. The Nano Mask is the first face mask in the world to utilize nanotechnology enhanced filter media to effectively isolate and destroy viral and bacterial contaminants. Nanoparticles enhance the intrinsic filtration efficiency of the media by acting as a destructive absorbent to kill virus and bacteria that come in contact with the filtration system. (NanoMask Testing, Time Kill Study and NanoMask and Bird Flu)

Bird Flu Protection may be used to obtain current bird flu news or visit the Bird Flu Forums to discuss the NanoMask or Avian Flu (H5N1) with others that are concerned about the possible pandemic. The Avian Influenza (H5N1 strain) is serious and the only way we can protect ourselves is by educating our families and friends. Learn as much as you can, because ignorance could have fatal consequences.

I was reading about this on Poynter's site. The manufacturer is pretty sure they will work, but he's still waiting for the final results to come back from the lab. :smoke:

William Raub, who oversees emergency preparedness at HHS, has placed an initial order of 150 million masks for a national stockpile despite the Institue of Medicine saying don't count on the masks for protection.

I can't decide between pink or red...and the green is nice. As someone who uses disposible masks in my hobby, glad to see a designer involved.

7. Good way to avoid Bird flu is not drinking raw chicken blood.
Until or UNLESS the flu mutates to human-to-human spread, then avoiding dishes made with raw chicken blood, are a safe bet... cuz that's how most of the people who got it so far where doing.

Experts Dismiss Bird Flu Film as Flight of Fancy

ABC TV Movie: Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America
On Tuesday, May 9 at 8 p.m., the ABC television network aired a made-for-TV movie titled "Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America." The movie follows an outbreak of the H5N1 avian flu virus from its origins in a Hong Kong market through its mutation into a pandemic virus that becomes easily transmittable from human to human and spreads rapidly around the world.

The Department of Health and Human Services prepared a Viewer's Guide and some anticipated Questions and Answers to provide factual information for viewers of the movie.

20. These won't work. Unless they're faith based...
Unless it covers the whole face and part of the head, particles get in. I have to use masks pretty frequently, and none fit snugly enough to the nose and cheeks to prevent leaks.

Once again, the gov spends money on worthless equipment so they can say they did something to "protect" us.

21. Bird Flu protection? Eat more vegetables!
The boost to your immune system -- and incidentally, your overall health -- will do a lot more to keep you healthy than a mass-marketed mask that hasn't been tested.

Vitamins are also a possibility, but you're on your own there -- and lots of people hate the idea that anyone should take vitamins at all.

Better public health would really go a long way. More money for biosurveillance that is dedicated to epidemic illness monitoring, not just preserving and protecting drug companies' profits. We (as in "The Reagan Administration") really screwed the pooch during the start of the AIDS epidemic. If the same scenario happens with a future influenza or a similar virus, the evolution of the ensuing pandemic will be much more dramatic.

Bird Flu is not a ploy to distract us. The ploy is the idea that we're (the Administration and the Pharmaceutical industry) doing something when we're just sitting on our hands.

22. Are they stocked right next to the duct tape and plastic sheeting?
At your local Home Depot? :sarcasm: How are things in S.E. Asia? Is bird flu rampaging through the area as we speak? We'll deal with it when and if it happens, just like Polio, Scarlet Fever, Killer Bees, SARS, etc. The one thing we should be obsessing about, and should have been since the mid-80's is AIDS. A real epidemic gets ignored, and we all know why.

Is Bird Flu Just A Flash In The Pan?

Main Category: Bird Flu / Avian Flu News
Article Date: 15 May 2006 - 15:00pm (PDT)

In South-East Asia, where the first human cases of bird flu surfaced in 2003, not one human or chicken has become infected in 2006 so far. Does this mean the H5N1 hits chickens hard, then a smattering of humans, and finally just evaporates? Or, as is the case with a tropical storm when the eye passes over you - is it a lull?

4 May 2006 21:30 GMT WSJA(5/15) Officials Study Indonesian Bird-Flu Cluster

Copyright © 2006, Dow Jones Newswires

(From THE WALL STREET JOURNAL ASIA)
By Nicholas Zamiska

An unusually big cluster of suspected bird-flu cases involving eight members of an extended family in Indonesia is attracting attention from local and international health officials on guard against any sign the virus may have evolved to spread easily among humans.

After attending a recent family gathering, the eight people living in the northern part of Sumatra island fell ill. Six of them have died in the past week or so, according to Nyoman Kandun, director general of disease control and environmental health at the Indonesian Ministry of Health in Jakarta.

Local tests, which have proved highly reliable, have shown that five of those family members were infected with the H5N1 virus, a deadly bird-flu strain, although a laboratory in Hong Kong is in the process of confirming those results. Specimens from one of the six people who died weren't available.

....

snip

A nurse who attended to some of the patients also came down with an influenza-like illness, although she seems to have shown symptoms prior to treating the patients, according to Dr. Kandun. She and others in the family's village are currently being tested for the virus.

While there have been no obvious signs of poultry infected with bird flu in the area where the people died, according to Dr. Kandun, the virus has been widespread among the country's birds. Many human cases of bird flu have been confirmed in places where there have been no reported infections among poultry. Birds are known to harbor the virus without showing symptoms, and cases of the disease in birds might go undetected.
