Anybody here know UPS or FEDEX protocols? Mail being opened.
Today I took delivery of the fifth package this week that has been tampered with. I took a snapshot while the delivery guy was still here.

The first four I wrote off as whatEVER but what are the chances of this happening five times in about a week?

Do UPS and FEDEX facilities have a secret room as the phone companies do where our stuff can be tracked or logged by "national security professionals"?

I could give a flying f because if anything, this is about intimidation which is wasted on me. But, is anyone else seeing this?

Thoughts?

1. Could it have been opened at the store from where you bought it?
Because I have noticed lately that I have to dig to get an un opened box of stuff a lot. Like wine glasses, etc.,

3. Well, if they were opened at the facility, wouldn't they tape over
the place they had to open? What comes here is broken tape that has been patted back into place (or not). The one before this one was opened from the bottom and was barely closed up again -- something a shipper probably wouldn't do on purpose.

The merchandise is always okay. It's the outer box that's mess up.

Must be that al Qaida black dress shirt I ordered for Doug. :silly:

2. I can try and find out
Fed Ex Freight headquarters is in the town where I work, and I know several folks who work there. BTW, the goji seeds I ordered came FedEx with no evidence of tampering.

4. Some times trucking companies open and check contents
Edited on Mon May-15-06 01:01 PM by augie38
to make sure the shipper's declarations, on the bill of lading, is what is in the carton. Rates at based on whats in the shipment.

5. you ever see the opening scene in the movie Pet Detective?
where Jim Carrey is delivering a package. Well that is exactly how most drivers treat the packages. The one UPS guy I dealt with for years was horrible. He'd back up to my loading dock, open his door and start tossing or kicking packages around the truck in his qeust to find mine. Always said it was the people w ho loaded the trucks fault. It wasn't unusual to have several packages partially opened upon delivery.

7. I pulled up to my house as the Airborne Delivery truck was
dropping something off. She took the Tyvek envelope and threw it at my garage door.

Needless to say, the notebook inside was ruined.

12. DH worked for them as a 2nd job for years, same stories. He tends to pack
things we sell and ship with those stories very much in mind.

17. Yup, lots of tape, lots of padding
I shipped and recieved computers and their components with values up into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even though everything was insured, it was a pain in the butt having to file claims and could set a project back months waiting for reimbursement.

11. I would say unlikely to "tampering" on a NSA level
But the boxes that move through a UPS hub can be treated terribly. A package would be handled by at least six different people, ony two of whom would have a public face (pick up and delivery), travel down miles of conveyor belts (literally), and have any number of opportunities to be dropped, crushed, kicked, toppled, etc. MOST of it is unintentional - there are some assholes - and is a box is found open to any degree during the process it is supposed to be put aside and resealed, often solidly but sloppily (too much tape, too small a box), but not always. If its a matter of a corner coming up then just pressing it down isn't uncommon.

Alas, there are thieves who look, but usually the boxes with items off interest are well recognized (say, DVD wholesale shipments) and fishing expeditions are probably uncommon.

What happened to your package is not excusable, but it is also not uncommon. Especially within a week...the hub where they were finally put on a delivery truck might probably jsut had a rash of mechanical/personel/asbentee/etc. problems. Remember, most guys who handle yur packages are work there part time in the middle of the night because their "REAL" job doesn't provide the necessities: fair pay, insurance, etc. Working a second job in the dead of night rarely makes for happy workers.

Sorry it happened, but you shouldn't make a federal case out of it (aahhhh...so there IS a good place for that expression :))

13. I ship UPS all the time
and they are horrible, depending on where the package is going. For some reason, shipments from TN to FL get damaged 1/2 the time.

I would say it's more likely that the box was damaged in transit and you are seeing a halfhearted attempt to close it back up. DHL & FedEx seem to treat packages a little better than UPS.

14. I work for a state agency
and I know that, if UPS or FedEx suspects certain items in a box (in our case, untaxed tobacco product), they'll open and inspect it (on their own or at the State's request).

FYI....

15. I worked at UPS whilst in college...
I worked load and unload. SO many packages were damaged and destroyed during the course of an average workday, we pronounced UPS as "OOPS!"

16. Well...not a similar story but...
one time after donating to DU...I went to my mailbox to find my sticker and dontation letter envelope from DU opened and the letter and sticker torn in two...

So I went to the local post office and showed them what I found...of course...no action was ever taken...this was last year sometime and nothing has ever come of it...

But I do believe that UPS and FED EX have the right to inspect packages they find suspect...
