I Met Some Of The Tuskeegee Airmen Last Week!!!...
And you wouldn't believe what one said:

I don't remember his name, but if one is interested I'm sure a little googling would find it. Anyway, while in training he was court-martialed and found guilty of assault of an officer (a felony) for pushing past a white officer who was denying him and the other black airmen access to the Officers Club. He was commenting on this time in history, and the fact that even though it caused him great personal trouble, he had no regrets. He was eventually pardoned by Bill Clinton.

Anyway, he was talking about this and said something like (as close to quoting as i can remember): "You have to stand up and do what is right, regardless. That is how you protect Democracy! Now, I'm not sayin' we have a democracy right now..."

The room was dead silent for a second...then erupted in applause.

There were about 10 of them present, and it was wonderful listening to them tell their stories. I feel like I got to touch a bit of history.

1. Talk about national heroes
These guys were and are true patriots. They went through hell and did an amazing job in WWII. Wow! I would have been completely blown away too to meet them. What an honor.

3. You met Roger Terry
A short version of his story is here, in the section entitled "The Freemen Field Incident". I loved his crack about democracy!

They were an amazing group of men. You were very lucky to have the opportunity to hear them talk.

4. Wow
How fortunate for you.

We're losing the Navajo Code Talkers, too. You're a lucky witness to history.

5. I believe they are truly to be treasured!
I have been in awe of them and their history from the moment it finally became public knowledge.
