SHUT IT DOWN! SHUT IT ALL DOWN NOW!!
Edited on Thu Jan-12-06 01:23 PM by Darkhawk32
No more fucking around with the Repukes. They are capitulating in the fascist transformation of this country. It's time to do what the Repukes did in 95.

The Repukes are in dereliction of their duty and it's time to take the ball out of their hands.... literally.

Shut it down. Shut it all DOWN!!

3. Agreed
To even be considering installing a Supreme Court judge nominated by a fraudulent president, not to mention fraudulent GOP majority in both houses of congress, is way beyond absurd -- it's surrealistic, and just damned wrong.

4. Shutting it all down is the only way to stop these fascists
The way some posters there think that there is a logical or rational solution to stopping nominees or ending the war or convicting Bushco of war crimes, like there is a functioning system in place to do this. That if we just filed the right lawsuit in the right place it would solve all of our problems.

But we know better - and we know that being careful isn't going to get us anywhere.
Most people are much more comfortable sitting at home writing letters to their reps or the newspaper, signing online petitions and voting in MSNBC polls, and believing that it will affect change. They don't want to get out of their comfort zone and do something at least jarring, if not effective. Also many seem to get put off by people who do.

So those of us who DO advocate these riskier things, or who at least support and encourage the people who do them, can get very frustrated. Because we believe (naively? I don't know) that the more people involved with these efforts the better. That if we had had 40,000 people arrested at the WH last September instead of 400, maybe it could have made a real difference?

As for tactics, the only thing I think would work is mass protests/strikes. I don't mean 300,000 in DC on a Saturday afternoon (although I personally have a BLAST at those events!). I mean whole cities refusing to work, whole industries shutting down.

Shut it down. Shut it all DOWN!!

61. fall 1995...
We were on a 10-week driving tour of as many National Parks as possible.
We were stopped at a gate into Kings Canyon NP in CA (to see the sequoias)
and were told by the Park Ranger, very politely I might add, that the park was
closed due to the shutdown in DC. He then kindly directed us to a gate about
15 miles away, through which we could request entry to a church camp inside
the park. Worked like a charm! Except for the haze from controlled burns, it
was worth the effort. Fucking rethugs!

48. Now now, lets keep it down
Remember when the nuklar option was on the table and our 'moderates' negotiated a compromise? Many here applauded that action. Truth is, the senate dems should have shut it down way back then. Before those appellate judges got in, before the bankruptcy bill, before the budget bill, before the extension on the Patriot Act. And right here, many voices were raised to say the compromise was good as we still had the filibuster for the time we needed it.

Well, the time is way past.

I'm gonna make a prediction. I bet that just enough Dem Senators give the green light to Alito, that he gets in. Thats how it's been, thats what will happen this time also. Any takers on a friendly wager?

Cindy Sheehan:
"Anybody could do what we did in Crawford, Texas. We just went down and sat down," Sheehan told the crowd of several hundred people, with Academy Award-winning actor Sean Penn in the front row.

She urged them to loose their apathy and do something. "We have to get so freakin' fed up with what's going on that we all go and sit down," Sheehan said.

Sheehan, a Berekley resident whose 24-year-old soldier son died in Iraq, attracted hundreds of anti-war protesters to her makeshift camp near Bush's ranch in August.

"These people, they're not going to change unless they see us out in the streets," she said at the forum that organizers said was among dozens of town hall-style events held across the nation.

Just Do It.

83. They have shortcuts they use. Instead of actually READING the bills
they have a procedure to skip that. What the Dems can do is invoke the procedure to actually read every word of every bill. Each bill can have THOUSANDS of pages. The Dems could be reading bills until November 2008.;) It doesn't actually SHUT DOWN the Senate, but NOTHING the repukes want to get done will get done.

The House is shut down-- Chanted to the tune of "the roof-the roof-the roof is on fire"

Ok I know its the Senate- but the phrasing wasnt right.

Personally-- If ALito is confirmned-- I dont think we get another chance. NOt in '06. I think we are talking suspension of the Constitution, purges, prison camps for acitivists disruptors, more dissappearances. I have beeen really forward to '06, my 2nd carrer is in Campaign field operations-----------------

I think we have to be ready to go down to DC in numbers to support the dems if they

either 2008, or until Impeachment..

Each "victory" for these monsters brings us one step closer to fascism.

Shut down, let essential govt rely on last year's budget/policy and don't re-open until this man has been lost to history.

92. Filibustering Alito is the shake up we need....
When are the Elected Dems going to draw the line? When, as a group will they finally stand up and say enough? What horrible tragedy will be the catalyst?

A trillion dollars of unnecessary foreign debt?
An unnecessary, endless war based on lies and greed with thousands dead?
Thousands dead and missing from a predictable, preventable disaster? 100s of thousands left homeless and adrift?
America growing more impoverished and dependent on foreign oil?
30 years of environmental progress reversed in 5 years?
Americans being spied on without warrant by the Federal Govt?
Americans held without trial or counsel?
Torture used as a routine and accepted means of interrogating prisoners in American custody?

Oh wait, they sat by and talked strategy and compromise while all that already happened. In some cases they supported it.

You have to stand for something or you will fall for anything. The republicans have decided to stand for bigotry, war for profit, institutionalized corruption and christian fascism. They are building their dream world with barely a speed bump on the way.

What are the existing elected Dems going to stand for collectively?

No Democrat should vote for Alito for any reason. A filibuster of his nomination should not have been pooh-poohed by prominent Dems as soon as the hearings closed. These people suck and it's really only a few that keep the Party from having some power. We all can work to elect better Democrats in 2006 and 2008 but how much more of America will we lose in the meantime?

115. Any one Senator has the right to demand a bill before the floor...
be read in it's entirety before a vote is taken. If each and every bill is to be read, very little will get done since many would take hours or even days to be read in it's entirety. That is what is meant by shutting it down. It wouldn't be a total closure but little would get done.

117. Shutdown the media bs anyway
The media will be forced to cover it in depth. It would go on for days and build, like Cindy Sheehan camped out in Texas. As the days go by more and more of Alito's lies and evasiveness will be exposed. The Democrats will read from the Constitution and the Bill of Rights on the senate floor. America will know they are saving the Republic. America does not want a king.

It would give us time to explain how Alito will overturn Roe, and then 70% of the people will be on our side. We have the moderate pro-life Republicans.

If the democrats don't put up a fight the media presents Alito as OK. For the media to report the negative on Alito, the Democrats have to speak loudly -

then it becomes a debate, a debate we will win.

We can declare a scandal, we have several to choose from. A filibuster will give us time to educate the people over the gravity of the situation. A filibuster will get people interested. "If the normally timid Dems who approved Roberts are blocking him he must be bad" the public will think.

We can educate the public about Alitos extremism. We will win a filibuster.

in the US. Paul Craig Roberts, a Republican no less, is pushing for impeachment...or at the least for a 'Damascus Moment' by the current crop of r's in office to stop and think about what they are doing to the country. Putting party in front of national interests is a project designed to fail.

131. Shut the Senate down, Will. It's very simple to do. All you have to do is
follow every single Senate Rule to the letter. Object every last time unanimous consent for anything is requested. Adhere to the letter of the Senate rules.

If you shut down the Senate, you have effectively shut down WarPig's agenda.
