Received more pre-opened mail |
|
This time it was a package (large manilla envelope) from my sister -- a Mother's Day present. ARGH!!
The end of the bag had been cut open, the card inside had been opened, then all the contents shoved back in and a big rubber-band put around it. No note or anything from the post office about damage or what might have caused them to open it.
I'm furious. (again)

All of my son's packages for his birthday were pre opened. I've received various cards pre opened too.
I complained to the Postmaster and it's stopped.

4. THAT is designed to be obvious. And creepy. Are you documenting? |
|
Edited on Mon May-15-06 03:09 PM by Hekate
What are you doing, if anything? Have you called your local PO to lodge a complaint, demand an explanation, fill out a form?
(I've only ever had the usual had damaged mail -- one envelope came with tire tracks on it, others have been chewed by sorting machinery -- but they usually come taped up with a stamped message that they were damaged en route. And I've had open business envelopes -- but they always look like the flap was never glued shut in the first place. All easily explained by incompetence or carelessness.)
You might call your sis first, to have her review the contents with you. (A thief may have been searching for a check or other valuables.) Then perhaps call the main branch or regional sorting center of wherever you are...
Good luck.

6. I thought I was being paranoid at Christmas time.... |
|
when I received a gift basket that not only came three weeks after it was supposed to, the cellophane around the basket had been cut open and the repacking of the shipping box was obviously not the original. I suspected it had been opened and inspected and now I'm sure of it.

I went to a different post office, the biggest one in the county and asked to speak to the manager. I told him about the mail and showed him how it was ripped. He gave me some bull about how it maybe was caughgt on rollers but it stopped after that.

8. Have you contacted the post office? |

I would be outraged if this happened to me and I would be screaming on the phone to the post office.

13. Yes -- went there this afternoon and spoke with the postmaster |
|
He told me packages sometimes get caught in equipment and so-forth. I told him I was aware of that, but, in the past when that happened, I'd get my letter or whatever was damaged in a plastic baggie with a note explaining it had been damaged by the Postal Service. The ones which have come to me lately have:
1) Clean cuts (not the type of damage machinery or accidential rips might create) 2) No plastic baggie, no note, no nothing (Most are not even re-sealed -- maybe wrapped in a rubber band like the one today)
It's frustrating. I'm going to the area center tomorrow to see if they have any answers for me.

I've had that happen before as well
Last fall, my father in TN sent a card with a check and cat pics in it
I receive ...here in Baton Rouge a week or so later
Two pieces of paper, the front half of the envelope and the back half of the envelope, two nearly perfectly separate squares in one of those Post office baggies
Couple of weeks later, my father calls with some amazing news...he just got a baggie too. The contents: Card - almost perfect condition, no separations or cuts Check! - almost perfect no attempts or forged signatures And all cat pics with no damage
Post office had no explanation for him either
I originally thought that maybe its because of the holidays, but its now 8 months after the hurricanes, the news reports that the postal service has a handle on all our new residents and things are now running smoothly and better than expected
Mail taking week to 10 days coming from CT, TN, AZ However, recently two instances mail - in regular envelopes arrived less that 48 hours after mailing from CT/New England
Missing mail never arriving - I think that some of it is petty theft en route
Some mail has had the slightly beat up appearance, and the little tears and folding back, as was mentioned in another post
I think that something may be definitely going on, even more so reading the rest of the posts Here I was thinking it was just poor service, and maybe its just here, but others are having similar issues I'm going to start keeping track of this, there's too many coincidences

9. Airlines are required to open and inspect all cargo... |
|
packages and containers before they go on to the plane, but I haven't heard of mail being opened before. It's another 9/11 thing.
This is more than disturbing since all mail is supposed to be inviolate, but it could possibly be some airline employees opening the parcel post packages along with all the others. Mail, incuding packages, normally goes on commercial airliners as cargo even if it's not stamped as airmail.

friends. We need to start connecting the dots.

This happened to me once and the PO has the mail in a plastic bag listing the reason it was damaged.
It requires a federal warrant to open mail. Very serious to open someones mail to steal of even to be an ass(postman or neighbor).

Noticed envelopes opened which contained financial information, and other envelopes where the left 1/4 had been rolled back like someone looked inside without opening the whole thing.

18. International mail, I understand. Domestic mail? That's just plain wrong |
|
I guess I got to start vacuum-packing my mail that I send out now? So that if it is tampered with along the way I can determine this by the time it gets to the other end?
Mark.

19. My package from overseas: |
|
While on business, my husband mailed back some souvenirs. Out of the 4 wine glasses he sent, one was broken (probably normal shipping issues) and one was missing completely (not normal). The wrapped present for my daughter (a Swedish board game) had a large slice down the middle side of the wrapper (exacto knife) and the fedex box also had a large slice down the side. No note, no explanation.
I get the security thing I guess but if there's obviously NOTHING suspicious in the package, how hard is it to slap a sticker or note in it stating that it had been searched?
