Immigration Issue = Red Herring !
or any other appellation you'd like to apply to a phony crisis.

I know lot's of people here like Lou Dobbs ( to varying degrees) but his constant ranting about illegal immigrants is more his personal bias than a National crisis he makes it to be, and for the last year or so that he has been on this soapbox, most people have ignored him. But, when the shit goes wrong for the gangsters in Washington, look out ! Any port in a storm, and the more divisive the better.

Plamegate, Katrina, NSA spying, and mounting death toll in Iraq,-- along with the now public belief we were lied into the invasion-- just to name a few of the truths that are bubbling up into the public view, and require a HUGE emotional, wedge issue. Cloud up the air, muddy the waters, throw a little red meat to the uninformed and haters. Try to keep the lid on things a little longer. This is what's REALLY going on.

Living in So. California-- where the largest portion of the undocumented workers live, I can tell you for sure, few people pay any attention to their presence. They are part of the community for better or worse. I've yet to hear one person complain about this issue in the last few years, because we all know, if they were to disappear tomorrow, the state would collapse. Yet some wacky Congressman from WISCONSIN--no less-- joins a racist TV commentator to team up to divert the country's attention away from the lawless action of the gangsters running this country into the ground.

The only way to pick a guys pockets, is to distract him. I. for one, won't be distracted.

2. Yessir.
Well said, and I agree. This is Bush's latest attempt to find an enemy target to make everyone look away from his failures. Make everyone angry at immigrants, stir up some racist hatred and some liberal indignation, try to pretend that the real problem with the economy is immigration so you can blame the liberals and some other non-white people some more. Typical Rove/Bush. Rile up the small minds of the base and hope they shout loud enough to drown out the truth.

3. I have to disagree
bushco wanted to more or less grant them amnesty. That doesn't look like making them into our enemies. And illegal immigration is a serious problem. Maybe not where you live, but in alot of the country it is.

6. I strongly disagree !
Bush, himself, may truly recognize the need for a guest worker program or amnesty, but those who are running for office in Nov. & those who are being fitted for orange jump suits desparately need this diversion.

11. Yes. It's win-win for Bush. It diverts from Iraq and scandals no matter..
... what gets passed, or what he promotes.

Backing some form of guest worker program or amnesty allows him to regain some of the "compassionate conservative" image he first ran on.

And no matter how much conservatives may hate the idea of giving illegal aliens some measure of legitimacy, they'll hate what Dems do more than anything Repubs would or will do.

Making this an "issue" where there was none simply takes away from all of the issues where Bush is losing BIG TIME (Iraq, gas prices, scandals, Katrina, etc. etc.). Whether Repubs would win on this issue is open to debate, but they stand a better chance of winning on this issue than on Bush's record. In fact, given Bush's stance, it allows them a chance to distance themselves from Bush in the 2006 election.

27. Not where he lives??? Southern California.? I live here too and this is
a purely manufactured crisis. Nothing has changed over the last years as far as influx is concerned and yet all of a sudden it's a crisis requiring the NG. What crap. And so many gullible Americans fall for it yet again. It's racism given a different name. If it weren't people would be willing to choke off the jobs at the source...the corporations. They have pulled this same race baiting trick so many times...when will American workers get a clue!

are here illegally. Another 1 in 10 has legally immigrated.

Why wasn't this urgent 2 months ago? Last year? Your xenophobia is blinding you to the bigger picture.
This is the "what wackos hate" issue for these coming elections.

29. No kidding! So now, to oppose W I need to be racist and xenophibic like yo
I think not. I think that like the OP and most of the post show, this "emergency" is the new product the Bush machine rolled out for these elections. Like war was for 2002 and gay marriage for 2004. Again, to busy hating mexicans to notice these coincidences.

17. So when did it get to be a crisis ?
When Lou Dobbs said it was or when the Repubs needed a wedge.

BTW, have you ever met or had contact with anyone you knew FOR SURE was undocumented ? Not flaming, just curious.......

23. It's like that here, but...
I saw the same thing in the steel mills of the mid-west 50 years ago, except then, it was Eastern Europeans fleeing communism, repression and unemployment. Neither they, nor their kids spoke very much english--if any--and they sure had some funny customs....oh well , they joined the unions ( which we Blacks were not permitted to then) moved to the burbs, and became Reagan Democrats and now, dyed in the wool Repblicans.

18. People here in the "heartland" will eat it up.
I know of seemingly sensible people buying into the hype. On the coasts, people are accustomed immigrants. Around here it's seen as an invasion. They're not used to their white bread existence being altered.

i've lived here permanently since 78 and spent almost all my summers her growing up.

and it never, ever comes up in any conversation.

accept now we poke fun at people who are complaining that we hear about on the telley.

but legals and illegals swirl around us all the time -- nary a word. ever.

31. Funny, I heard exactly the same thing when he was going on and on
about off-shoring, L-1, and H-1b visa programs, few listened then either. Face it, much of the declining standard of living here is the direct result of flooding the lower-class employee pool.

While it is true that the other issues you've listed are huge, it does not mitigate the crisis they bring with them.
