Bush Offers Military Solutions to Every ProblemAn Arizona lawmaker who represents border areas criticized President Bush's plan to deploy National Guard troops to the Mexican border, comparing it to the White House's moves in Iraq.
Congressman Raul Grijalva -- a Democrat whose district includes the border towns of Yuma and Nogales and some as western suburbs of Phoenix -- said Bush's plan to deploy guard troops at the border is aimed placating conservatives and mirrors the war in Iraq.
"The Bush initiative is a transparent political ploy, one intended to appease the anti-immigrant extremists within his own party," said Grijalva, a liberal Democrat and critic of the Bush administration on Iraq, immigration and other issues.
"The Bush Administration and the Republican Congress have responded to difficult national crises with a military solution, as was done in the failed policy in Iraq. In introducing this same pattern to the immigration debate, Bush leaves behind his past six years in office, where he has stood idly by, without effecting any change as it has to do with immigration," said Grijalva who worries the move will militarize the border and hurt relations with Mexico.
