67. No, it was a CLASSIC imitation of REAGAN...from the little head tic
to the hand gestures, to the accent, to the tempo, to the actual use of words.

He was DESPERATELY trying to emulate Reagan. About the only thing he didn't do was say (pause) "Well...." (eye twinkle/head tic/small smile). Guess he couldn't get that down in three short days. He did manage to do the head tic, though, and some of the hand gestures. Three times, at least.

If we put the Guard on the border, could the immigrants just walk across and be recruited right there? Solves a myriad of problems if they just do it that way. :sarcasm:

70. Why now? To change the subject!
If I were a special prosecutor, I'd hire a bunch of bodyguards and wear ballistic clothing. And never go anywhere without four camera crews.

72. Soy Muy Macho
Bush thinks he is Mr. Macho with his bait and switch political move that will have his wingnuts happy that finally they are going to come down on the mexicans (while pushing for the guest worker program or path towards citizenship under the table). I'm sure the National Guard is itching to do this kind of service :sarcasm: . This sounds like he's saying you want to become a resident or citizen ... then fight in my war you wetbacks. Frankly, I couldn't watch the rest of the putos speech because I was ready to :puke:

I wonder what Bush is really up to? Someone mentioned a push for national id cards. I also wonder what would happen if some trigger happy National Guardsmen shoots or kills illegals crossing over? Would this cause a national incident, will this incite our own Latino population? I don't want to think what it would do ... my head hurts ..

77. A decent speech over all about a complex issue.
I think the ideas, if implemented, would be one way to move forward on this issue in a constructive way. I'm sure congress will have ideas on how to improve upon them, or ideas of their own.

It does begin with getting better security at the border, and providing a path to citizenship for those who have contributed to our society for years.

83. He had a more manageable plan than I presumed, but
the National Guard is over-taxed and WILL be required elsewhere at some point. And not to dance at a political dog and pony distraction issue.

I crashed real early last night... rain was making my pain act up, took a la-la

ennywhoo--I did read the transcript

:wow: there was not one mention of SEPTEMBER 11!!! Amazing.
Although he did manage to link immigration to Iraq:

On a visit to Bethesda Naval Hospital, Laura and I met a wounded Marine named Guadalupe Denogean. Master Gunnery Sergeant Denogean came to the United States from Mexico when he was a boy. He spent his summers picking crops with his family, and then he volunteered for the United States Marine Corps as soon as he was able.

During the liberation of Iraq, Master Gunnery Sergeant Denogean was seriously injured. And when asked if he had any requests, he made two: a promotion for the corporal who helped rescue him and the chance to become an American citizen. And when this brave Marine raised his right hand and swore an oath to become a citizen of the country he had defended for more than 26 years, I was honored to stand at his side.

If there's a DU IRONY Award - I'm nominating this quote from his speech tonight:

We cannot build a unified country by inciting people to anger or playing on anyone's fears or exploiting the issue of immigration for political gain.

forgot to add: according to my partner Cat survey on speech -- 4 out of 5 cats were on the bed prior to bush speech. Two sentences into the speech - all 4 cats left the room. They returned after the speech.

this morning - I found 2 hairballs in the livingroom
