4. I'm not ready to count Feinstien out
That woman receives a ton of money from Women issues group so I find it challenging that she would sell them out.

I think she, like many other democrats, are downplaying the filibuster now so republicans can't go crowing on the news about how they're going to do the "Nuclear Option"

Think of this hearing as a game of Poker. You might be holding four Aces in your hand but you're not going to let them know because you want to build that pot up and make a ton of money.

78. I got a sinking feeling when Specter spoke of not limiting Dems
question time, because they could see "the light at the end of the tunnel".

I knew in my gut that a compromise had been worked out already. Alito would pass. There was no tension today.

28. Here's what I think is happening with Feinstein and the filibuster
The biggest thing outside of the Alito hearing is of course Jack Abramoff and the brewing republican scandal. Republicans are desparate to paint democrats as doing the same thing - taking money from Lobbyists and then procurring favors for the group and they would just love to find a few democrats they could paint in that picture.

In comes the Alito hearing. What better way to cull a candidate into the "Money for Votes" scandal then bring up Feinstein and the amount of money she has received from pro-choice groups. Mind you, she's never done anything illegal but to republicans that is something that doesn't matter when you need soundbytes on the evening news.

I have a feeling she's playing off the filibuster so she isn't a part of the evening news. Anything she says and does now isn't going to matter - we just need her vote when it counts!

I understand she gets alot of money from womens groups, but her hubby is making a killing on contracts right now.. If it is about the money, than we are screwed because her family makes a huge sum off of defense contracts. I hope she does what is right, but her family are huge profiteers so I'm not going to count on it. I hope you're right, but I wouldn't bet the house if I were you.

Wake up everybody. If Hillary Clinton wanted a filibuster, there'd be a filibuster. She is the block in everything, from Iraq to Katrina to Alito. I hate to say it, but maybe we should start hammering away on New York State and make her work to even keep her Senate seat. I'm sick of this shit too.

Most women aren't paying attention
And not every woman is pro-choice either. She's probably looked at ALL the numbers on abortion, which is why she's moved to the prevent abortion plan instead of protecting reproductive rights as a principle.

34. Any senator who wants to filibuster can filibuster
it is an inalienable right. No group decision is required. Don't let the staff tell you that stuff.

Strom Thurmond holds the record for 24 hours 18 minutes. He did it all himself. He had a can there to take a pee and took a steam bath prior to starting so that he would dehydrate and could drink without needing to pee.

Just tell Kennedy to get a can over there by the podium.

I feel it is our responsibility to keep Alito from becoming a supreme court judge, simply because he will most likely overturn Roe vs. Wade. And without the option to choose, women will suffer in this country for a long time to come.

That's it. I don't care about anything else. That alone, should keep him out.

in the coming election. Her support of this monster that would likely tear down Roe v. Wade shows that she prioritizes corporate cronyism over women's rights to choose! We have to all commit to getting another challenger to her in the coming primary then. Hope it's not too late to get someone good to challenge her then.

Just now called her office and let the staffer now that it's either fillibuster or expect me to vote against her in the upcoming primary.

70. I hope Kennedy, Feingold, Boxer and others will consider walking out
during the floor vote if a filibuster is not possible. Show us that there are some of you who will still fight to the end for our rights. Show the people that there is a Democratic party out there that still has core principles. And leave those so called "moderates" to hang with their Repug buddies.

72. How does "walking out" = "fighting for our rights?"
It's symbolic. There's no actual fight.

I'm not sure if it's the right symbol.

73. it is symbolic
Edited on Thu Jan-12-06 03:01 PM by Strawman
It's the only way of symbolically saying we will not be complicit with this. It's a way to show extreme opposition in an extreme circumstance. A roll call vote no will not make the headlines. Nobody will notice. The liberal Dems who give a shit about our rights will just look like a powerless faction. If the others Dems won't filibuster, walk out of the vote in unison. It's a powerful public statement of disapproval.

81. I know for Christ sakes, hasn't any heard of the sixties?????????/
People actually used to have to put their life on the line to show they meant they weren't backing down. They actually risked being arrested!

Way to much to expect of a politican, I know.

76. Call Senator Grassley's office!
Question his commitment towards supporting oversight of FBI and other security agencies if he doesn't ask Alito about his stance on executive power and State Secrets privilege usage in the courts! If he does ask this question, we win big on putting another dent in the armor. If he doesn't we have one more weapon against him in the coming election to question whether his support for Sibel Edmonds and other whistleblowers, etc. is sincere or not. Call him now!

79. Can we remove the (F) behind her name
No not the D, that denotes Democrat but the F for female. Because she's betraying more than 50% of all Americans! Way to go Di Fi!

87. Here's An E-mail I Sent To My CA Friends On This
Feel free to cut-and-paste to your friends to get this going.

========================================

Hey all,

I'm e-mailing everyone that I know is in California and/or people I know have friends in California, because from looking at some blogs it appears the Democrats may be getting wobbly about filibustering Sam "My Liege, Bush" Alito -- and the reason may be your senior senator.

At least that's what I've heard from a friend from MA who called Ted Kennedy's office. According to that aide, Sen. Feinstein is against Alito but doesn't support a filibuster -- and if that's the case, word is the Democrats won't even try.

Now, the guy may get in anyway and the Repunks might detonate the "NuKyuLur OpShun" anyway -- but if the Democrats are going down, then Goddammit let's go down swinging!

YOU are the ones that should put Feinstein's feet to the fire. YOU are her constituents. YOU are the ones that need to get everyone you know on the horn or on the e-mail lists to get her to not just oppose Alito, but to SUPPORT a filibuster.

There is too much on the line to do nothing. Do what you can, but DO SOMETHING.
