'Cause you know there's a Bush crony waiting to make a buck on this "policy" speech.

16. Well, Hal Rodgers of Kentucky has been funneling money to his
home district for the last 3-4 years trying to come up with an ID card for airport, rail and maritime workers with NO success. So far mega bucks has been spent but no cigar - big article in the NYT last Sunday about it. I found it the Courier-Journal web site. You would think a simple little ID card wouldn't be too hard but if you are a Republican committee chair, giving out a no-bid contract, working your son's employer into the mix and you like to take trips at the expense of a group of airline officials - it is just a damn near insurmountable task. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the repugs to actually get an ID card program going - but will bet they will spend huge sums of money in no-bid contracts to try.

Anti-terrorism card dealt Rogers' way Anti-terrorism card a boon to Rep. Rogers

By Eric Lipton
The New York Times

WASHINGTON -- The Department of Homeland Security has invested tens of millions of dollars and countless hours of labor the past four years on a seemingly simple task: creating a tamper-proof identification card for airport, rail and maritime workers.

Yet nearly two years past a planned deadline, production of the card, known as the Transportation Worker Identification Credential, has not begun.

Instead, the road to delivering this anti-terrorism tool has taken detours to locations, companies and groups often linked to Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky., the powerful chairman of the House subcommittee on homeland security appropriations.

It is a route that has benefited Rogers, creating jobs in his home district and profits for companies that are donors to his political causes.

Rogers also has taken 11 trips on the tab of the American Association of Airport Executives, a trade association that was to profit from a no-bid contract that Rogers helped arrange. The controversial contract was withdrawn last week.

Work also has been set aside for Senture, a tiny start-up company in Kentucky that employs John Rogers, the congressman's son.

15. Wouldn't it be funny if they used undocumented workers to
manufacture the "tamper-proof ID cards"?

Come to think of it, I can almost see the SNL skit already where the border fence is being built by undocumented workers.
