They understood that the taking of human life requires grand, eternal motivations, of which there are many: conquest, self-defense, greed, glory. Killing for the sake of it also qualifies. Only Americans can imagine going to war to "burnish their resumes." What does that say about us?

Can't say I've read his book, but I've long admired his writings on the web. When major 'tude seems to be the entre and only requirement to be a columnist nowadays, Taibbi's brand of near reckless subversion makes him a man apart. He seems to be constitutionally unable to quit fucking with Republicans. In person. He's brave, he's clever, he's mean. I love him.
