Al Gore's movie - An Inconvenient Truth |
|
Edited on Tue May-16-06 09:58 AM by RubyDuby in GA
I just saw this very well done film last night and I just wanted to encourage everyone to go see it when it's released in a few weeks.
I was fortunate enough to get into an advanced screening where VP Gore took questions afterwords. He and Tipper are looking fantastic these days! For the celebrity watchers - Sean Penn was there too (and this is in Atlanta - on a Monday night!), Ted Turner and former Senator Sam Nunn were also in attendance. Didn't get to talk to the man himself, but I did have a nice chat with Tipper. I'm very pregnant right now and the first thing she did was come up and put her hand on my belly! The liberal bun in the oven doesn't stand a chance! He's a Democrat through and through! :)
There are some very disturbing facts in this film. Nothing that we here at DU don't already know, but it's done in such a way that even Dubya could understand that if we don't take drastic measures in the very near future, we will face irreversible consequences.
I strongly encourage everyone here to see this film when it comes out and take 5 friends with you. In the meantime, while waiting for it to open, please visit www.climatecrisis.net to see what you can do to help!
On a side note: on the way home from this showing last night, the comparison between Vice President (or Mr. President, if you will) and President Carter hit me. I don't make this comparison lightly. I love Jimmy Carter - I'm naming my son (who is due in a couple of weeks) Carter after him! The comparison is this: when President Carter left the White House, he didn't stop to go play golf. He knew there were things out there that needed to be addressed and our government was failing at it. He started his own foundation, even though he could have slipped quietly into retirement, and got to work. The same thing goes for Vice President Gore. When that complete and utter miserable failure was awarded the White House, VP Gore went back to giving his slide show and lecture on this very important global issue to any and everyone who would listen. It may not be politically expedient, but it's necessary for the greater good of our planet.
I see them both as men who have a vision far into the future and they can't rest until we see it as well.

Which reminds me to go pledge that Mr. Laurel and I will be attending on the opening weekend. Luckily, it's playing at several theaters in our area.

6. I just posted a link to the movie's website. I can't wait to see this. |
|
My hope is that the demographic that flocks to it will be in the 18-30 or so age bracket.
This is the a demographic that can push through change that will last.

P.S. Lucky you. How wonderful it must have been to chat with Tipper and see the real President, as he mingled with the "common folk" :-)!
I hope that he runs in 2008. We need him more than ever. MKJ

7. That was the first question in the Q & A session |
|
Edited on Tue May-16-06 10:06 AM by RubyDuby in GA
He said to the whole audience that he was "a recovering politician and was only on step 9" - got a good laugh, but afterwords a friend of mine was able to talk to him and again encouraged him to run because having him in the White House would be a huge benefit to enacting the types of protections that this film suggests and he this is his direct quote: “Like I said, I’m a recovering politician. But you always have to worry about a relapse.”
Please relapse Mr. Gore!
Edited because I can't spell and apparently grammar isn't my strong suit today.

Is there a possibility of some factors existing out of our control? like the sun getting hotter?

16. The way it was explained |
|
is that it may feel like the sun is getting hotter, but not really.
The atmosphere is trapping more of the sun's rays that normally bounce off the surface of the Earth causing more of the polar ice (which acts as a mirror to reflect the rays back into space) to melt causing more of the sun's rays to be absorbed by the surface of the planet.
A vicious cycle.

19. cool! your offspring got to meet Tipper, while still in utero! |
|
At that stage, the only famous person I encountered was the Shah of Iran (ewww!) who brushed past my parents while he was visiting Montreal.
One of my co-workers has a "bun" that's almost ready to come out, but she's determined to see Al's movie on opening weekend. At first I was worried that she might get bummed out by how enormous the global warming issue is, but from what you've reported, it sounds like it offers people some hope about what to do next.
