CT-Sen: NOW to endorse Ned Lamont
Edited on Tue May-16-06 10:42 AM by BurtWorm
From dailykos.com:

Joe Lieberman's softer side:

Lieberman said he believes hospitals that refuse to give contraceptives to rape victims for "principled reasons" shouldn't be forced to do so.

"In Connecticut, it shouldn't take more than a short ride to get to another hospital," he said.

Harsh. So harsh, in fact, that both the Connecticut and the national chapters of the National Organization of Women have taken the extraordinary step of endorsing the primary challenger of a long-term Democratic incumbent.

From a Ned Lamont press release:

Ned Lamont's United States Senate campaign will announce a major endorsement today at 1 p.m. at the YWCA in Hartford, Connecticut.

The press conference, in the Soromundi Room on the first floor, is being hosted jointly by Lamont and the National Organization for Women's PAC. The YWCA is at 135 Broad St.

In addition to remarks by Lamont and NOW PAC officials, the event will feature posters of maps, created by a Connecticut volunteer, that have been called a "brilliant piece of guerrilla protest." It will also feature representatives of a feminist web site launched recently in support of Lamont.

Check out the link above for Connecticut Bob's handy maps for rape victims in case a hospital refuses emergency contraception.

1. nice sentiment Sen. Lieberman
and you do know, living in a state with so much invested in the health insurance industry, that if you go to a different hospital or doctor, you might not be able to get medical coverage if they are not in the network?

That statement above really bothered me when he uttered it a few weeks back.

4. especially in the more rural corners of CT
Sure, if you live close to Hartford, New Haven or Stamford there are hospitals all around. However, even in a state as small as Connecticut, there are a few areas where you may have to drive a bit to get to a hospital. And, if that one hospital won't give you the medicine for religious reasons, it's still further to go... granted, I'm not talking a 2 hour drive, but I'm guessing it could be 20-25 minutes vs 40-45 minutes in some areas if the first hospital refused you.
