If Americans Are Telecommuting More Why All the Congestion?
Despite reports that more employees are telecommuting at least part of the time, commuters driving into major cities or through heavily traveled suburban corridors on any workweek morning would beg to differ: congestion is growing. And near the top of the heavily congested areas are many of the high- tech havens. Traffic congestion is in fact continuing to worsen, according to the 2005 Urban Mobility Report, an annual study by the Texas Transportation Institute. Since the group began to keep records in 1982, congestion has increased every year.
"There is no single solution that can reverse the growth in congestion," said study author Tim Lomax, a research engineer at TTI. "Congestion is a complicated issue and can't be solved with one approach nationwide. We need to think about how policies and programs enacted at the federal, state and local levels affect congestion."
