I recently ran a Counterspy scan on my computer and I turned up a commercial key logger program I did not install. Has anyone else on this board had any experience with this type of spy ware being installed by a third party?? Or am I just paranoid because our country is in the grip of a corrupt fascist wannabe dictatorship?

2. You're not being paranoid. |

If someone's installed a keylogger on your system, they've done it for a reason. While I wouldn't put it past Uncle Stalin to do such a thing, it is far more likely to be either:
(a) Someone who wants to capture your online banking or stock trading account names and passwords, so they can steal your money. (b) If your PC is the property of your employer, they may be checking up on you.
In either case, I'd get the damn thing off your machine very quickly and make sure you have a good firewall, antivirus product, trojan sweeper and antispyware (Counterspy is fine, but I also use Spybot S&D).
Having a keylogger on your machine is potentially serious. At the very least, I'd change your onling account passwords immediately, using a different, clean PC to do so. Then don't access them with the affected machine until you're absolutely sure it's clear.

Thanks for the advice. The program I found is authored by SpyPatrol Surveillance, which is not the one being discussed on the other spylogger thread. My computer is my home machine, it is not networked and I am the only administrator authorized. Suspenders and belt, I use both Counterspy and Spybot along with System mechanic and Norton security suite. I am going to go back to nightly scans and see if anything else turns up. Thanks.
