Cardinal Urges Legal Action Against 'Da Vinci'
By Philip Pullella
Reuters

VATICAN CITY (May 8) - In the latest Vatican broadside against "The Da Vinci Code," a leading cardinal says Christians should respond to the book and film with legal action because both offend Christ and the Church he founded.

Well, if old J.C. himself plans to be invlived in a lawsuit, it's the fundies who better watch out. God is coming and man, is she pissed. Look at all the murder and mayhem these people are causing in the name of "Christianity."

<snip>

"Sometimes it is our duty to do something practical. So it is not I who will tell all Christians what to do but some know legal means which can be taken in order to get the other person to respect the rights of others," Arinze said.

"This is one of the fundamental human rights: that we should be respected, our religious beliefs respected, and our founder Jesus Christ respected," he said, without elaborating on what legal means he had in mind.

He can't elaborate further because it's stupid. What could this idiot possibly sue over? Dan Brown expressing himself under his First Amendment right in the United States? Good luck, jackass!

<snip>

Those who blaspheme Christ and get away with it are exploiting the Christian readiness to forgive and to love even those who insult us. There are some other religions which if you insult their founder they will not be just talking. They will make it painfully clear to you," Arinze said.

This appeared to be a reference to protests by Muslims around the world over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.

So, basically this guy would like to see Christians allover the world going bezerk, gathering in groups and protesting the right of people to express themselves. We're already experienced that hree in America. It's called bush voters on Election Day 2004. These people are fuckin' nuts.

I'm a Catholic, albeit a non-practicing one at this point in time because I'm tired of all the crazies. This shit just pisses the hell out of me. It is so insane and it is so offensive.

1. It was all right when the Church
was all but blowing Mel Gibson over that hideous movie he made, but this one isn't OK?

Oh, wait.

There's heterosexual sex in this one?

Yeah, that would do it to those guys in dresses.

4. Yes, this is the biggest thing the Catholic Church has to worry about.
Edited on Tue May-16-06 06:48 PM by Kutjara
Forget child abuse by priests, falling church attendance, disasterous attitudes to birth control, their involvement in one of the biggest bank frauds of modern times and a history of collaboration with fascist regimes. No, the big issue is that a film makes them look bad. Yeah, it's the film that's ruining their reputation. Otherwise everything would be hunky fucking dory.

7. If you wanna take it a step further...
The only people who believe this movie is true are delusional nut-jobs. If the Cardinal is concerned about what those people think, the Church is in more dire starights than I thought.

The book is sold as fiction. It was on the NY Times best seller list under 'Fiction.' You wanna check out the book at a library -- go to the 'fiction' section.

5. I thought you can't liable the dead?
Oh...that's right. Jesus lives on in each of us.

BTW: Since when did frivilous lawsuits become practical?

He needs to take up a hobby. He could write his own book. Something about an evil, anti-Christian book whose author is struck down by God. Oh wait. That was done about 20 years ago -- In the movie, God killed Rushdie.

8. Silencing dissent proves your argument is stronger.
It's like that ugly talk show fucker Al Franken made look like an asshole. Just tell people to "shut up" every time they say something you disagree with. What better way to exercise your Constitutional rights than to squelch those of others? And, when they do shut up, your argument wins. See?

12. 'Blasphemy' isn't even something that applies to others ...
... and only applies to congregants. A Jew, for instance, cannot 'blaspheme.'

11. I'm beginning to suspect the Vatican invested in this movie
... for a percentage of the gross. With the press they're getting, they're making sure it grosses over $100 million in the first 6 months, afaics.

blasphemy. That was the sections that I found hysterical when I first read the article. I could care less if someone wants to boycott, so I didn't comment on the boycott suggestions.

No one said protests and riots weren't ok, but really, do we need anymore delusional, angry Christians acting like the wounded puppy and the persecuted ones?

18. Yes. As long as they don't
burn buildings, riot or put a hit out on Dan Brown or Tom Hanks. They can attempt boycotts and lawsuits because this is at least a civilized response. Providing no attempts at intimidation or coercion are attempted to win their lawsuit.

I will grant you now, of course, it pure bullcrap. Blasphemy can not apply to those not of your religion, but of course the history of religion is all about killing people for blasphemy. Christianity and every other Organized religion is false and wrong and I (plus everyone else) should be able to satirize and ridicule it to our hearts content. Fortunately, this isn't the 1410 Battle of Grunwald and the Teutonic Knights aren't going to try and kill me for my atheism...

15. You know, even if Jesus was married and was a man, what is the
big deal?

Personally, I'm a Christian. Even if everything in Di Vinci Code is 100% true, that would not rock my faith one little bit. I happen to believe that perhaps there is something greater than me in the universe. I don't happen to believe that Christianity is the only true interpretation. It appears to me that all religions tend to have the same focus: the live a good life and be kind and loving to others, whether you find this through Christ, Allah, a Pagan Goddess or if you find your own path outside of religion. Anyone who is so insistent that they are the only way and they are right all the time is not only delusional, but mathematically impossible since it is impossible to always be correct! But, this is just by $.02 Take it for what it's worth.
