Senate votes to make English our official language (kinda sorta)63-34
The Senate voted Thursday to make English the national language of the United States. Sort of.

Moments after the 63-34 vote, it decided to call the mother tongue a "common and unifying language."

"You can't have it both ways," warned Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., a fan of "national" but not "common and unifying." Two dozen senators disagreed and voted for both as the Senate lumbered toward an expected vote next week on a controversial immigration bill.

The debate occurred as President Bush traveled to Yuma, Ariz., to dramatize his commitment to curbing illegal immigration. At the same time, the White House sent Congress a formal request for $1.9 billion to cover the costs of steps he announced earlier in the week, including the deployment of up to 6,000 National Guard troops to states along the Mexican border.

1. What a bunch of weak children we've become in this country.
We've gone through wave after wave of immigrants from all over the world and here we are in the 22nd century worried about which language will be common. This is stupid, dumb, and idiotic.

4. Yeah, it can't be both ways
National AND common AND unifying.

Actually, it doesn't sound like it was so unifying in this case.

And of course, we can all sleep better tonight knowing that when we wake up tomorrow, it will be safe to speak English in America.

8. Next on the agenda...
1. Building a 30 foot tall wall around the border (including all coastal stretches--don't want any renegade illegal immigrant surfers sneaking in through our undefended beaches)

2. Greater restrictions on same-sex dating. (No getting past first base until the third date.)

3. Declaring October "National Unborn Child Month" in celebration of fetuses.

4. Abolishing the designated hitter in the American League.

5. Establishing a guest worker program to hire people to do the landscaping and gardening around the wall mentioned in item #1.

10. Actually misleading - This bill was voted by moderates to replace a much
more damaging amendment sponsored by Inhoffe and voted by the Senate with some Democratic votes, that would have made English THE official language and punished those who do not speak English. It is in fact damage control. All the hardcore racists did not vote this bill/
