3. I think for all the fans they lost

they gained just as many. I got into them via the controversy. I sort of liked one or two of their songs, but wasn't really into them, but the "to-do" made me notice them, read some of their lyrics, did some listening, became a fan. For a big commercial act they're actually very good, excellent musicians, Maines has a beautiful voice. They get huge points just for having the smarts and good taste to recognize genius songwriters - Patty Griffin is my all time favorite.
