31. Good luck folks. I'm 62. I've managed to do the standard salutations
in Spanish, but that's only because I worked in San Antonio for 6 years, and we had a great receptionist who would help a bit with the nicities of the Mexican culture.

Don't bother to ask me to learn spanish. I'm too old to care about doing that.

If I encounter anything I think I really want to know and it's in a foreign language, I use an internet translator. Works great for me.

42. OK - but why Spanish?
Certains d'entre nous savent le français.

Некоторые из нас знают русский язык.

I can read most Spanish because I have studied Romance languages, but, hell, I don't go to Mexico without boning up on my Spanish. Why should they come here without knowing the language.

Look, my ex is from Jordan. Can speak perfect English. And he never understood that either.

My beloved is a linguist. He can't understand it, either. Learn English. To make it in this country, you need to.

45. Something that I learned about many of the Mexicans or
Central Americans that come here is that Spanish is not their first language. They speak a native american dialect from their district. So they have to learn English through Spanish which is not their native language. Yet most of them learn. Just because businessesry to get their patronage by advertising in Spanish and using bilingual employees doesn't mean that they don't want to learn. They do.

Yes, sometimes the old people, like their grandparents don't learn English because they are too old.

52. Spanish makes the most sense for a second language in the US
There just isn't much of a French population here anymore. And even those who are here by and large speak Cajun French, and though it might be similar to true French, there are some incredible differences even amongst those languages.

Though I'd love for American children to learn Spanish, French, German, Chinese...

55. My school actually offered Latin
Edited on Sat May-20-06 10:56 AM by lastliberalintexas
but it was one of the very few in our area to do so. Since many Texas schools have very limited budgets, many only offer Spanish as the foreign language of choice. Granted, it does make the most sense for my state, but it's just sad that school budgets are as screwed up as they are. But then I guess that's a discussion for another thread!

I don't know if Latin is really necessary, but it does provide a good start for all Romance languages. But then, being fluent in any of the Romance languages probably does the same thing. I'm by no means fluent in French, but I can understand enough of it to communicated very poorly with a Spanish speaker.

If only we valued education and learning for knowledge's sake in the US. :)

51. many yrs. ago I enrolled in a class to learn Spanish

when we got to things that were male and female tense (like chairs and tables, etc.) I said hunh?

it didn't make sense to give a sex to a chair. (maybe it wasn't a chair but it was inanimate things)

the instructor didn't have a why to this when I asked who determined which things were female and which male.

I couldn't get past this issue and quit the class.

however, if for some reason I need to know Spanish, of course I'll let go of the issue and learn the language.
