Republicans wanted severely brain-damaged woman to testify before Congress |
|
March 18, 2005
A Florida state judge blocked the removal of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube on Friday, as congressional Republicans maneuvered to keep her alive. Doctors had been given permission by courts to remove the feeding tube as early as 1 p.m. local time Friday, but the state judge's decision temporarily blocks that. Earlier on Friday, GOP senators had invited the severely brain-damaged woman to testify before Congress in an effort to prevent doctors from removing the feeding tube. The Senate health committee requested Schiavo and her husband Michael to appear on March 28. The Republicans made the procedural move to keep Schiavo alive despite court orders and her husband's wishes. After the Senate committee issued its subpoena for the Schiavos to appear, a statement from the office of Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist noted that it is a federal crime to harm or obstruct a person called to testify before Congress.
