I never missed a chance back in the day, whenever anyone gushed about Reagan, to ask exactly why they loved him so much. My mother, for example, used to talk about how sincere he was. I always responded by pointing out that the man was an actor, for God's sake. It was his job to fool people. No one was ever able to give me a concrete example of how Reagan made their lives better. And as for the popular allegation that Republicans always like to put forth that Reagan was responsible for the downfall of communism, well, that one is so easy to refute that it's not even challenging. When Ronnie said "tear down this wall", he was acting for the cameras. The Berlin Wall didn't come down just because Reagan willed it to happen. The Saint Ronnie brigade do need reminding of that, among many other things.

I have to say, though, that once I moved to the UK, I never needed to debate Reagan's merits with anyone ever again because he was about as popular here as the Dumbass is now. Neither of them ever fooled the British public.

So, yeah, I do agree with you that we'll be called on in the future to remind people of GeeDubya's shortcomings, but I still say that we do it in the interest of setting the record straight. Remember, we deal in facts, not just emotion (which is why the Truthout story has upset so many people this week with its "untruthiness"). The Clinton haters, in contrast, run on unreasoning hate and vitriol, blind to the facts. Facts? They don't need no stinkin' facts...
