AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Former President Bill Clinton said on Saturday global warming is a greater threat to the future than terrorism and that the United States and other countries must "get off our butts'' and do something about it.

Clinton, speaking to the graduating class at University of Texas' Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, said the United States must pursue policies that make "more partners and fewer enemies'' and use "institutionalized cooperation'' before there is catastrophic damage from global warming.

"Climate change is more remote than terror but a more profound threat to the future of the children and the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren I hope all of you have,'' Clinton said.

"It's the only thing we face today that has the power to remove the preconditions of civilized society,'' he said.

"I am not one of those who is pessimistic about the future of the world, assuming we get off our butts and do something about climate change in a timely fashion.''...

2. I've been wondering, Will Russia get a deep water port as Arctic
ice recedes? When the tundra thaws, what commodities might it provide the Russian/Chinese economies?

5. Global Warming is a danger...
but it should never be compared to terrorism during a campaign season. People still remember 9-11, movies have been made about Flight 93. To Americans, terrorism is real, they look at the skyline of New York and it not the same as it was 5 years ago. Global Warming is to their view abstract, with some corners going so far as to deny even the existence of Global Warming.

Global Warming can be made a campaign issue, but a candidate calling it more dangerous than terrorism stands to lose quite a bit.

6. Katrina should have shown everyone the fallacy of the Bush GWOT
Could a few terrorists accomplish what Katrina did? How many Katrinas will we endure over the next 10 years vs. acts of terror? While we've been dumping our national Treasury in the sands of Iraq, our infrastructure at home deteriorates. How many good paying jobs could be created by rebuilding our infrastructure and preparing for a post-peak oil society?

The priorities of the Republicans do not dovetail with our national priorities...glad to hear BC tell it like it is.
