I am done listening to movie critics....
Move critics all loved Brokeback Mountain. Well, I HATED the damn thing. And my hate for it has nothing to do with the homosexuality of it. I support gay rights and gay marriage. I just hated the movie and didn't feel it had any kind of plot at all. It was the most boring thing I have ever sat through in my life. It seemed like it went on forever and it just kept going and going and going... But the critics loved it.

Next...V for Vendetta
Critics hated the movie. I loved it. It was one of the better movies I've seen come out of hollywood in years. It wasn't perfect, but I really enjoyed it.

And finally...The DaVinci Code
Critics hated it. I loved it.
Again, not the best movie ever made. But I really enjoyed it.

This seems to be a trend with me. So now I have changed my movie-watching habits. Movies that critics hate will be on list of movies to definetly see. What critics love, it will be on my "wait until DVD" list.

1. Movie Critics are second only to food critics when it comes to scum jobs
to me.

Unbelievable to me how we live in the type of society that takes even having things like food and movies to granted so far to the point where we need OTHER people telling us what we need to enjoy.

Eh for what it's worth I wrote a review of Da Vinci Code (It was a positive one) that I doubt any critic will ever have the nerve to write

8. Movie/food critic
Both jobs that I would very much like to have!

That and music reviewer for "Rolling Stone" (25 years ago).

2. I'd say find a critic who agrees with you on movies you've seen,
then stick with that critic for future movies. I am lucky to be able to trust a critic who writes for my regional paper--I went to grade school with him so that might be part of it!

4. That's always been the best way to do it anyway. I hear from a...........
....number of people that "Brokeback Mountain" was not a particularly good movie - more mediocre. It had nothing to do with the subject matter - just the acting and the way the movie was written.

Here at DU people who have seen "The Da Vinci Code" seem to think it is great - I'll sure take everyone's opinion here over some paid movie critic any day.

5. Years ago I saw "Heaven's Gate" and liked when everyone hated it.
Guess it was the wild part of me rooting for the underdog. I have not listened to film critics ever since.

6. Use IMDB, and look at the aggregate user rating curve
Check out several movies you really like, and look at the curve associated with them. Then use the curve as a guide for future choices. For example, I almost always like movies that have a user curve weighted high to the top of the scale, but with a significant negative, too. That curve is deeply concave, and I know exactly what it looks like. When I see it, I go to that movie without even thinking twice.

This technique is the single most accurate predictor I've found of how I'll like a movie.

IMDB was my first bookmark, in 1995, btw.

Peace.

7. Me, too. What's with them? Its like a cult - they (except Ebert) have
decided to be "agin" it - they all got the memo but who wrote it?
