If you think it's unlikely the dems are going to filibuster |
|
then I'd ask you to think about why you feel that way.
I have followed the hearings and I think the dems are undecided and leaning toward filibustering.
I realize that in the media, the drumbeat is that it is unlikely for the dems to filibuster, but that means absolutely nothing to me. I see it as complete bullshit. Many of the news stories that make that assertion are very poor news stories, some of the worst I've seen.
They remind me of the stories after the 2004 election that assured us that Bush's social security scheme would sail through with little opposition. All those stories were very convincing until Harry Reid appeared on Meet the Press in January 2005 and made a simple declaration that he was going to oppose privitization. And the fight that was supposed to be the dems rolling over turned out to be a rout with the dems on the winning side.
I don't know what's going to happen, but I see the stories about how Alito is going to sail through are bogus. Don't let them influence you. It's not over. Contact your senators. No excuses.

the lie that I'm trying to debunk is the lie that this is a fait accompli. It's not, it's touch and go, and it's us that can make the difference.

2. The reason I feel that way is simple |

I've seen what the Democrats have done (or rather, haven't done) over the past five years.

4. try to overcome your prejudice, please |

I don't think what has happened over the past five years is relevant to this battle. This thing is happening now, post Katrina, with Bush's poll numbers in the 30's and with some very special circumstances that have only become known in the past couple of weeks.

The Democrats would all have to hang together but that is very unlikely. There are too many without spines...

8. Google News agrees with you |

http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=filibuster+unlikelyCertainly makes it look like it's a done deal. I think it's all bullshit. I think a filibuster is very possible, and that our input could make the difference.
