I've no plans to stand for US presidency again, says Gore

Rob Sharp, in Cannes
Sunday May 21, 2006
The Observer

Former US vice president Al Gore has denied rumours that he plans to stand for the US presidency, saying he could foresee 'no circumstances' that would cause him to change his mind.

Asked yesterday evening at the Cannes Film Festival whether there was any truth in speculation that he had his sights set on the White House again, Gore said: 'I don't plan to be a candidate again for national office... I don't see any circumstances that would cause me to change my mind. I was in elective politics for 24 years. I've made four national races, two for president, two for vice president. I have found there are other ways to serve, and I'm enjoying them.'

Gore dodged a discussion on whether Hillary Clinton would make a good candidate for the Democrats in the 2008 presidential race, although he stressed the importance of elections this year in the House of Representatives and Senate. He said he felt it was important for the elections to 'come out the right way so there's the chance of balance and accountability' through Congress, which he felt had been 'sorely missing.'

Gore is on a promotional tour for An Inconvenient Truth, a film that aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding climate change. He said humanity faced the prospect of the 'end of human civilisation' unless they accepted the reality of global warming.

7. Exactly.. He's in a better place now.. and he has the moral high ground

He can get all the attention he wants by being vocal as our environment crumbles around us .. People will see his work and beat themselves up because they COULD have had him as president, but few stood up for him when it counted.. It;s ironic that HE'S standing up for us when he could be kicking back..

10. I'll never get over it!
Never!

He is the President as far as I'm concerned. The rest of this crap that's been going on for the last five years is nothing more than a hoax.

3. Only 24 years? And that's supposed to be a lot? Run, Al. We need you.
We have some work to do, apparently. Al Gore is my candidate for president; he can win, so long as he avoids the FRICKIN IDIOT advisers from the DLC who tried to make him into someone he is not. Al, run. He really has no choice, and there is a slogan: Like Washington, when your country calls you, you have no choice but to serve. I will write Al Gore and remind him of that. Will you?

5. Then I and others will happily carry you on our shoulders, Sir!
I wonder how many great men and women have been dissuaded from seeking public office simply because of the battle to be waged against the filthy tentacles which otherwise so greedily wrap themselves around Power.

Give us an endorsement, save Joe, and we'll take it as a high recommendation indeed!

6. I have no plans to go to Pizza Hut tonight either.
That doesn't mean won't go. It doesn't mean I will go.

8. Not a no
He said he had no plans, which is neither a no or yes.
I think that is prudent. He also tried to get people to focus on the elections coming up, which is also prudent. I think if things go as we hope in the next federal election cycle, and we do take back Congress, it will give promise for us taking the White House away from those fascists as well.

11. Kind of sorry to hear that, but I can understand it...and he is
making an effective role for himself outside of elective politics.

12. I read it as ...he's
really happy doing what he's doing and feels he's making a difference.

As much as I'd like to see Gore run for Prez again, even though I feel he won the most votes in 2000 and the most electoral votes.. I think Al Gore is saying that it would take a freakin' miracle to knock him off this path that fate has forged for him.

14. Why should Al Gore have any faith in the Establishment? I sure don't.
Edited on Sun May-21-06 03:11 PM by Rex
After what his former fellow colleges did to him in the Congress Dome in Dec of 2000, why should he ever want to run again? I know I wouldn't.
