Verizon is Evil
A suggestion to my friends at DU...they canceled me last monday for looking at other providers.
I have to give their techs credit because they tried everything to get me back on line, without the knowledge that th evil bastards canceled and deleted all the software (because maybe they are nuts).

Now I get allot of progressive e-mail from many organizations plus I've been a bit of an internet activist. My bill was paid in full and they treated me like crap.

So I switch to Earthlink (http://my.earthlink.net/) I don't care what country they are basing their operation from, they treat you wonderfully and go out of their way to help you.

Now after this week of hell with Verizon, they have not released my phone number so that earthlink can install the DSL. You call them, they tell you are canceled, delete All the software, even mail. Now they tell me I will have to straighten it out with billing tomorrow.I wonder if I will get any real results then either.

All I want is to say goodbye forever to Verizon (unfortunately they monopolize Ma. telephone service and do business with a company that cares about their customers.

1. Verizon IS evil.
I made the mistake of trying to get VOIP, and this has lead me to a 6 month long headache, and the problem has yet to be resolved. They admittedly canceled my DSL service during the transition to VOIP. And each time I tried to get a "dry loop", as they refer to the process, three times they gave away my number to another customer. I was patient beyond what should be required, and they still were rude and idiotic.

They hung up on me. Transferred me into nowhere land. Had no clue what I was talking about. And the final insult was to accuse me of lying. I know there are some individuals who work there that are competent. I had the fortune, during this whole fiasco, to encounter a few. But they truly are a nasty company to deal with. I can only imagine how I'll be treated once I cancel my business with them.

10. I'm NOT defending Verizon-the-company here, just their employees
I've never had a bad experience with them and twice I've had particularly nice conversations with the person I was talking to.

Because of where we live, I can't cancel my local-service account with them, unfortunately, although when I switched to Working Assets for our long-distance service I didn't have any problems with Verizon.

6. OMG--that is ridiculous.
That is so beyond unprofessional. Thank you so much, JackBeck for posting this. (And thank you too, sasha:hi:) We're presently shopping for a high speed cable provider and briefly considered verizon. I was hesitant, because I've never been impressed by their phone service...

I'm sorry to hear of the way they've treated you. They do indeed sound evil.

3. I plan on canceling my Verizon cell phone...
...and I want to do this as painlessly as possible.

It's too bad that my bill is automatically taken out of my checking account. That gives
me the heebie jeebies.

I have never liked that company. They have over charged us a few times. We had problems
with them before.

I plan to call and cancel my service soon. If anyone has any ideas about how to do this as painlessly as possible, I'd appreciate the suggestions.

I'm sure that their people are getting an earful from untold numbers of angry callers who don't like what they're doing. I bet the phone jockeys are very crabby.

Too bad.

Does anyone have a good cell-phone service they can recommend?

5. I use Nextel/Sprint
and their customer service is so horrible, they tell you one thing and then come to find out that they may have left out something critical to your billing. It drives me nuts.

I have heard AllTell is pretty good but I don't know.

8. First thing you must do, after the last bill they took out from your
account, you MUST go to the bank and STOP payment against them!!! This is a must! I have done this with others which I had automatic payment with. Any due amount, they can send you the bill through mail.

Before switching, make sure, you have everything line up with another company first even if you have to over lap two service for a week. I did this when I switched to Comcast. When I switched with comcast and once they came and installed the new service (phone and internet), I called Verizon and told them to cancel my service as soon as possible. Boy, they were mad!!! LOL

14. You know....that's just creepy...
Why would a business get really mad about you cancelling service?

It's just a business decision!

Who do these people think that they are?

I can understand, a company being disappointed about losing a customer. However, these
people sound like freaks.

The more I hear, the more I can't wait to cancel service.

4. My husband is looking forward
To cancelling their service this week, for once and for all. He got a snarktastic reply from them in response to an e-mail about whether the company no longer felt it necessary to abide by the 4th Amendment. We got rid of Verizon cell service a while ago, because of their support of Tom Delay. But now that we can actually get a cell signal in our condo (thanks Working Assets!) we're getting rid of the land line altogether and using cable Internet.

7. Is Working assets primarily for cell service...
...or do they offer other service, too? I keep hearing such great things about them, I'd be interested in checking them out and throwing some business in their direction.

13. Cellular and long distance
I've used them for both for long stretches over the past 10 years, both before I was married and afterward. I was always impressed with their customer service; whenever there has been a problem (say, someone doesn't open his mail and doesn't realize he needed to send a voided check to set up the automatic payment), it was fixed quickly, and with a professional attitude.

15. LOL--been there!
 I'm glad they handled it so professionally and weren't snotty towards you. I hate that. I already know that I suck when I screw up in that way. I really don't need a rep to REMIND me just how much I suck. LOL!

Thanks, MountainLaurel--I'll check them out for long distance. Verizon is currently raping us on long distance. I'd love to take a bit of their money away. :hi:

9. Anyone happy or unhappy with Vonnage? How do we know if any of
these smaller companies are aligned with the big three? I want to change my cell.

12. I was just reading the Vonnage web site
you know what scares me about something like that, your calls come over like an e-mail.

I am becoming a rather cautious person these days with all the surveillance that is going on.

I am wondering about my own option once I get Earthlink (you should see all the security they have)

since I have the lousy luck of only having Verizon in my area, I am taking out a separate basic line and using only a land phone.

I don't know how much more security that will be, but is a land phone more secure than mobile and defiantly a cell.

I now understand how Orwelle excommunicated himself and spent the rest of his life in the woods in solitude. The man was defiantly a prophetic genius.

17. Skype has FREE calls to landlines and cells from your computer
this offer is good at least thru the end of the year ... it's 100% free ... i just started using the service about a week ago and it's great ...

the bad news is that you can't get incoming calls from a landline or cell unless you pay for a phone number ... but outgoing is totally free (unlimited calling inside the US to landline or cell) and computer to computer is also free ...

it's worth checking it out even as a backup to regular phone service ... here's the link ... the product is called SkypeOut: http://www.skype.com/

i also called Verizon to ask about the NSA crap ... the woman said: "wait, i'm supposed to read you a memo they sent us" ... i asked if she had received many calls on the subject ... she said i was the first ... yeah, right ... then she said she must have lost the memo ... i said, it sounds like you couldn't have thought this was very important ... she said "frankly, i don't" ... i explained a little bit about our Constitution and why it's important to safeguard our liberties ...

i've had pretty good service from Verizon (i have the works) but i'm thinking of moving some things to Working Assets once my Verizon cell contract is up ... does anyone know about their coverage in the Massachusetts area?

19. SunRocket
Is also worth looking into. http://www.sunrocket.com

A few of my friends have it. It's cheaper than Vonage and (according to them at least) has more and better features.
