Bush, Cheney, and their mob like to use the word "courage" when referring to our troops. The truth is courage is something that happens unexpectedly, in a time and place never thought of.
Many moons ago, a few of us were stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington for a while. One night, we went to a movie and there was a shortcut to get there. It was a log about a foot wide, lying across an arroyo about 30 feet long and 40 feet deep.
Since we were all "heroes," we decided to cross the log rather than go the long way around. One of our friends talked us out of it. All he said was, "Why break your neck just to go see a lousy movie?"
The following evening, everyone was off somewhere, but I was watching our friend who had talked us out of crossing that log. He was lying in his bunk, staring at the ceiling. I don't know how I knew, but I knew.
I asked him what he was doing that night and he said he was going to turn in early. Leaving, I went behind a nearby barrack and waited.
About 20 minutes later, he came out and started toward the spot where that log was. It was getting dark, so it wasn't hard to follow him. I watched when he reached the log. He sat on the ground for about 10 minutes and then stood up and walked across it like he was walking on a wide floor.
About a month later, he was shipped out to Vietnam. Those were the days when we were still "advisers," so as far as the army was concerned, we didn't exist. His courage there made him someone who anyone would have followed into hell.
The point of this whole story is that, what I saw my friend do that night took uncommon courage. A rationale human being wouldn't have crossed that log knowing there was no one there to help if he fell.
That is courage. And it is what those who claim to lead us lack.
