McCain: New School students need lesson in courtesy

By Jerry Harkavy, Associated Press Writer | May 21, 2006

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine --Sen. John McCain on Sunday lamented the nation's bitter political climate and suggested that students at the New School in New York take a courtesy lesson from those at Liberty University.

McCain, who appeared at a fundraiser for Republican gubernatorial hopeful David Emery, told reporters he was saddened by the reception he received last week from hecklers during his commencement speech at the New School.

The Arizona senator said he has spoken at schools throughout the country but never before found himself in a situation where it became difficult for him to get his message across.

"I've got to say that maybe the students at the New School could learn a lesson in courtesy from the students at Liberty University," he said.

McCain had delivered similar speeches last week at the New School, a historically liberal university, and Liberty, a Christian conservative bastion in Virginia founded by the Rev. Jerry Falwell.

It's a Republican trademark.

11. Remember the right wing riot at Gore's home in 2000?
They had no problem with being totally inappropriate.

5. I have no problem with people learning more courtesy. But to
learn it from people who don't practice it is quite odd!

He want people to learn courtesy from a school that teaches students that a solution to differences is to assinate foreigh leaders, & States suffer great losses from natural disasters because they're evil, is not the right source in my opinion!

A Vietnam vet who was held captive....bitching about being shown up by a graduating speaker and people who didn't like him...

I had very little respect for him already...but fuck him....You are a coward McCain....you wouldn't even stand up to protect your family when your so called friends attacked them.....

The students at the New School I hope they have begun a trend...Congrats!!

7. I always feel sorry for the college graduates one or two years
before a presidential election. Suddenly these politicians are breaking down the doors to present their message. They don't give a hoot about the graduates or their hopes or dreams. They just want to be seen.

McCain's desperation is really showing these last few weeks. I almost expect to see him sitting with the judges on American Idol Tuesday. :)

8. Maybe Mr. McCain should have learned something ...
... from his years as a POW -- like, don't embrace a US president who promotes TORTURE. It tends to reflect badly on your credibility.

Will someone please tell Johnny-Boy his poltical career is over?

Maybe we can send a video to Dr. Frist for an in-depth diagnosis.

Pull the plug, McCain, and save yourself further suffering ...

I hope he's the GOP nominee. He has completely sold out to the right wing fanatics. I'm ashamed I ever gave him money. He lets people kick him in the face and then he licks their boots.

12. Next time a progressive liberal gets asked to be a commencement speaker
at Liberty, we'll pay attention to their reaction, John. Grow a thicker skin John...you are going to find an awful lot of rude people who are sick of the corrupt and hypocritical Party you stand with.

14. As a coward who dropped bombs on innocents he really shouldn't
try to lecture others on "courtesy." He slaughters villagers in a far away land in a war of aggression, and now he postures as someone offended by hearing people express their political views. What utter hypocricy. What a vile human being. What a wimp. What a coward. He deserves prosecution. He deserves no more respect than any mass killer.

15. How courteous is it to kill 100,000 Iraqi civilians?
Not to mention almost 3000 American soldiers.

Asswad.

To turn what is suppose to be a graduation ceremony
into a platform for his crass political agenda.

McCain = a serious douchebag

Thanks for pissing on the students' graduation ceremony
with your Republican talking points. You're the one who needs
a few lessons on proper courtesy and manners, douchebag.

17. If it takes being perceived as "rude"
to get dipshits like McCain to pay attention, then Dems ought to step up to the plate and be confrontational as hell. Clearly this struck a nerve with Sen. Bush Ass-kisser. Good.

18. Hey John McCain:
1. These kids are critical thinkers, not sheep that have to think the way Jerry F. tells them.

2. You were in New York City, the capital of "rude", not Virginia where the myth of old style courtesy exists.

3. Different audiences give different reactions. You want New School grads to applaude you? Show some balls and go back to criticizing Bush. I promise you won't be received as a "flip-flopper".

4. And hey, last time I looked, this is still America with the Freedom of Speech thing. Take it like a man instead chiding your audience like disrespectful children at an elementary school assembly.
