Graduation.....A thanks....and a request for a 'decoding' of the vestments
First, I wish to extend my congratulations to all of my fellow DU'ers who are graduating this year.

:applause: :applause: :standing ovation: <-------------- what? there's no 'standing ovation' smiley?

Secondly, I wish to extend my appreciation/thanks to all of my fellow DU'ers who are their EDUCATORS out there.

:applause: :applause: :standing ovation: <---------------- it wouldn't be possible for folks to get a(n) (higher) education without YOU!!! Thanks for your 'service' (b/c I'm sure many times it must feel like a battleground out there in many ways)

------------

I just have a question, (or can anyone refer me to a site that explains or decodes).....the graduation garments that we will see on the graduation presiders?

For instance, one teacher I knew had his Phd, but had two 'slashes' on his graduation vestments (does that mean that he holds TWO phd's? Then there was the 'principal' who had three 'slashes' on her garment (and her hat was different from the rest).

Can anyone help explain/decode the language of the 'graduation vestments'?

Thanks in advance! :-)

1. Bars on the sleeve indicate a doctoral degree.
You get to wear the gown that is worn from the college you graduated from, so apparently the one teacher graduated from a college that uses two bars and the principal from one that uses three.

5. Thank you......that site really explains a lot (some history in there
as well).

I never would've thought of search words 'academic regalia' (but that is very succincint).....I'm such a 'bad googler' - I really need to take a class....

Again, thank you.

3. I'm 14 years past my doctorate, but if I recall correctly
There are two colors on the doctoral hood. One color is for the "type" of doctorate (M.D., PhD, ScD, etc), and the other is for the school who awarded it. I believe blue is the color for the PhD and green is for the MD. I have an ScD, the color for which is gold. My granting university is Johns Hopkins, whose color is also gold, so my doctoral vestiments are black and gold. We called it the "bumble bee" outfit. :-)

4. My "hood" was purple & yellow on black; black robes w/a couple of stripes
on the sleeves. I don't know where they got the colors from, but the Institute originally granted degrees in psychology and my class was the first Mythological Studies (with deg. emph. in depth psych.) group to go through.

Way cool, I have to admit. :-)

Did you decide to keep your hood?

6. Sadly, no. I rented my regalia for graduation.
Mr. moc was in grad school too, and we were as poor as church mice.

I always thought I might get some official Hopkins regalia, but I never have.
