Just for fucking letters (7 in that fucking (and this)case). It's not big deal. Say it out loud. Fuck. How can a fucking word be bad? It's like rain. It's not bad weather, it's just the context. For me, repeated conditioning that "fuck" is somehow a bad word has just trained my body to release a small amount of endorphin every time I say it. Fuck.

Okay, so now I've typed it three times, twice in this very post :D

16. I value DU as a crucial "machine" for |
|
collaborating to create and promulgate solutions.
Curse words, like all others, are communicative. Like other words, they can be used effectively, or if over-used, their impact can be diluted to nearly nil.
Also, while I acknowledge the importance of venting, I find some of the angriest posts on DU upsetting and not necessarily contributing much to creating or promulgating solutions.

how dares't thou defile our political abode with your mammering, knotty-pated clotpole questions and beslubbering, tickle-brained fustilarian poll. Thou aren't a rank, onion-eyed hugger-mugger and shal't surely meet a currish, clapper-clawed puttock of a hell-hated bum-bailey on the gleeking, folly-fallen hedge-pig of a horse you rode in on, too!
Further Shakespearean insults can be devised from a list of uncommon columns at www.renfaire.com/Language/insults.html, or they can be automatically generated for you at www.william-shakespeare.org.uk/a1-shakespearean-insults-generator.htm
(And yes, I enjoy a good cursing, creatively applied, but find most people lack both the originality and creativity to effectively pull it off, and though they try to overcome their inadequacies with unstructured bile and inadequate bombast, they usually fall far short of their mark.)

I normally censor my curses with an asterisk or other symbol in place of one or more of the letters in case others might be offended, but I myself am not offended by curse words. I'd much rather be here where people let some foul language fly here and there, than be in that other place where cursing is prohibited but it is routine to see posters gleefully announcing how they would like to beat, torture or even brutally kill gays, Iraqis, Dems, and others.

it's no longer shocking, like it once was. I save the word for when I really, really need a good word to express my feelings. If I used "fuck" in every single sentence, what other word could I use when I get really mad?
Edit: Its easy to miss and/or ignore any real feelings a person might be trying to express because the word is so overused.

It's not really adult to swear a lot. It's actually kind of juvenile. The truth is that profanity is pretty fucking inefficient at actually describing something. Profanity makes for shittly adjectives, because it really isn't very fucking descriptive, compared to qualifiers like "red" or "hot" or "soft." Do you see what I trying to fucking say here?

use it for every other word. Because of what DU is and represents, I like my daughter (13) to read it and I feel uncomfortable about some of the posts. Not many, but some. Usually, I don't go in those when she's "reading over my shoulder". You can pretty much tell from the header. Again, it's only the posts that overuse the language. Most that do are not even worth reading. But again, IMO, we are talking about a small percentage here.

I don't like sexist language, either. Especially the word "pussy" and using it to denoke weakness. When men push something the size of a watermelon out a hole the size of a lemon, then they can use a demeaning word for my genitalia as an insult. Actually, "balls" or "bollocks" or "scrotum" would be better for this purpose. Those are fragile body parts. ;)

aren't smart enough to express themselves without using "shock" words. I use the words myself on occasion, but I never use them for their shock value and extremely rarely in front of other people. I use them when I'm really, really angry. I don't use vulgarity to express ideas. I can let vulgar words slide off my back, but I really don't much respect people who can't get out a coherent thought without using at least one. It just comes across to me as low class. I realize that it is just a habit with a lot of otherwise intelligent people and do my best to overlook it.

66. Sorry, I can't take you seriously, |
|
as I was raised in a more gentile environment. I will never be able to take anyone seriously who loves using low class street language. If I reaaly wanted to hear that, I can go stand on a street corner and listen to a gaggle of teenagers.
In the circles I've always lived in - middle class, non wealthy, mostly blue collar and white collar working people - that kind of language is used only rarely and usually in anger. Maybe you could call it classist, but nonstop foul language makes me cringe. I'll also wager that I'm not the only one who feels this way - its effect is much like watching someone picking their nose or scratching their butt in public, and you also might compare its effect to a loud, stinking passage of intestinal gas - can't help but feel embarrassed for the offending person.
You'll never find me chastising anyone here for using foul langauge. I can take it - there's no langauge I haven't heard before or even used myself, but someone asked, so I'm giving my opinion. It's no skin off my nose.

Perhaps of the most interesting and colorful words in the English language today is the word "FUCK." It is a magical word that just by its sound can describe pain, pleasure, love, and hate. In language, "fuck" falls into many grammatical categories. It can be used as a verb, both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John). It can be an active verb (John really gives a fuck), or a passive verb (Mary really doesn't give a fuck), or it can be an adverb (Mary is really fucking interested in John), a noun (Mary is a terrific fuck), or an adjective (Mary is fucking beautiful). As you see, there are few words with the versatility of "FUCK." Besides its sexual connotations, this incredible word can be used to describe many situations:
Greetings: "How the fuck are you?" Fraud: "I got fucked by the car dealer." Dismay: "Oh, fuck it!" Trouble: "Well, I guess I'm fucked now." Aggression: "Fuck you!" Disgust: "Fuck me!" Confusion: "What the fuck...?" Difficulty: "I don't get this fucking business." Despair: "Fucked again." Incompetence: "He fucks everything up." Displeasure: "What the fuck is going on here?" Lost: "Where the fuck are we?" Disbelief: "Unfuckingbelievable!" Retaliation: "Up your fucking ass."
It can be used in an anatomical description: "He's a fucking asshole." It can be used to tell time: "It's five fucking thirty." It can be used in business: "How did I wind up with this fucking job?" It can be maternal: "Motherfucker." It can be political: "Fuck GWB." And never forget General Custer's last words: "Where did all these fucking Indians come from?" Also, the famous last words of the mayor of Hiroshima: "What the fuck was that?" And last but not least, the immortal words of the captain of the Titanic: "Where is all this fucking water coming from?"
The mind fairly boggles at the many creative uses of the word. How can anyone be offended when you say fuck? Use it in your daily speech; it will add to your prestige.
Today, say to someone: "Fuck you!"

both transitive (John fucked Mary) and intransitive (Mary was fucked by John) - These are both cases of a transative verb; the first is active, while the second passive.
It can be an active verb (John really gives a fuck), or a passive verb (Mary really doesn't give a fuck) - I suppose "to give a fuck" is a verb (although "fuck" really functions as a noun in this case), but in both these cases, the verb is active. The passive version would be "A fuck wasn't given (by Mary)." You confuse a negative for the passive voice.
it can be an adverb (Mary is really fucking interested in John) - Actually, in this case it serves as an intensifier, its usual role. The adverb is "really."
