Breaking point: Inside Story of the Guantanamo Uprising...
The camp commander's claims of a co-ordinated revolt are challenged by new details of the violence.

'The prison camps at Guantanamo Bay were gripped by a series of uprisings and disturbances last week which suggest a state of near revolt, it emerged yesterday.

Reports from within the controversial detention center in Cuba claim the base's military commanders believe there were links between a series of suicide attempts, medical emergencies and the violent clashes between 20 inmates and guards on Thursday.

It was "probably the most violent outbreak" in the camp's four-year history, claimed Rear Admiral Harry Harris, the detention and interrogation center's commander. "These are dangerous men and determined jihadists," he said.'

1. If these are "dangerous men and determined jihadists"
...then why did none of the guards suffer anything more than "cuts, scrapes and bruises, just like a good football game"?

7. Indeed, I agree with you
If it sounded as if I was disappointed that no one was hurt, that wasn't my intent. There just appears to be a typical Bush** regime disconnect going on here between the "official" report and what the likely truth is. It could be these detainees are innocent and desperate after being held for so long without due process, under intolerable conditions, and perhaps are trying to draw attention to their plight.

I feel sorry for the troops too. They've been conditioned not to question authority, and have been told the detainees are terrorists. Imagine what the stress of living in a constant state of alert like that would do to you, how easy it might be to forget these are humans or that some among them are innocent, as has been proven by the release without charge of some of the population. Not everyone has the strength of will to stand by loftier principles when faced with court martial and peer pressure. It's much easier to go along and treat everyone like a monster.

Damn Bush** for the whole disgusting situation. I hope he rots eternally in his own personal hell.

3. Oh yes, our government learned well from the British government.
Check out the tactics used by the Brits in the late 1960's, the 1970's, the 1980's at the Maze Prison in Northern Ireland...

Some things never change....

8. Who do you believe, Bushite torturers, or...?
"Moazzam Begg, the Birmingham bookshop owner released from the camp last year, said the detention cells were too closely monitored and controlled for inmates to organise a revolt so well. Clive Stafford Smith and Brent Mickum, defence lawyers who regularly visit clients in the base, said they suspected the official accounts were 'rubbish'....

"Mr Begg, who was seized by the CIA in Pakistan in 2002, said he was sceptical that inmates would be able to avoid the round-the-clock surveillance by CCTV cameras, foot patrols and watchtowers to make and hide weapons. Medical staff were also scrupulous about ensuring detainees swallowed their medication.

"He added that electrical equipment such as fans and cameras were normally out of reach. "'It's not like a Second World War prisoner of war camp where you can dig tunnels. There's so much security, day in, day out. Everything is logged, everything is watched, everything is scheduled,' he said.

"Mr Stafford Smith and Mr Mickum, who represent detainees with close ties to the UK, said these unusually detailed and immediate accounts by the US authorities confirmed the Bush administration had begun a public relations offensive to rebuild support for the camp."

---------

The abomination of this prison just makes me want to scream. Reading what these prisoners did, to cry out in desperation to the world, is heartrending and searing. Can you just imagine what these people have gone through? It boggles the mind.

"Dangerous men and determined jihadists"? Who says so? Who convicted them of their "dangerousness" and their "jihad"? Where is the evidence? Why can't they be confronted with these accusations, and speak to the world in their own defense? And what the hell kind of offense is "jihad"? What does that mean?

Crap. Utter crap. These lying S.O.B.s! Bush toadies and yes-men! What a disgrace they are, to the US military and to all of us!
