Wired News Violates Court Order, leaks FULL AT&T NSA spying documents!

Whistle-Blower's Evidence, Uncut

02:00 AM May, 22, 2006

Former AT&T technician Mark Klein is the key witness in the Electronic Frontier Foundation's class-action lawsuit against the telecommunications company, which alleges that AT&T cooperated in an illegal National Security Agency domestic surveillance program.

........................

Here we present Klein's statement in its entirety, with inline links to all of the document excerpts where he cited them. You can also download the complete file here (pdf). The full AT&T documents are filed under seal in federal court in San Francisco.

all links to ALL documents here:

WIRED : Why We Published the AT&T Docs

AT&T claims information in the file is proprietary and that it would suffer severe harm if it were released.

Based on what we've seen, Wired News disagrees. In addition, we believe the public's right to know the full facts in this case outweighs AT&T's claims to secrecy.

As a result, we are publishing the complete text of a set of documents from the EFF's primary witness in the case, former AT&T employee and whistle-blower Mark Klein -- information obtained by investigative reporter Ryan Singel through an anonymous source close to the litigation. The documents, available on Wired News as of Monday, consist of 30 pages, with an affidavit attributed to Klein, eight pages of AT&T documents marked "proprietary," and several pages of news clippings and other public information related to government-surveillance issues.

who are fighting the junta.

We need to set up P2P networks if they are able to fuck up the internet as a medium for the free flow of info.

Learn Morse code, learn strong encryption, get your ham license. Learn alternate forms of communication.

21. Also, start getting all the info on Narus you can find
Because the scrubbing will begin ... get notes on sec filings, Bush crony relationships, cross references with other comps like Nuestar... someone should take lead on organizing this research... for example, create sub areas and have each person take a sub-area

suggestion:
-cross reference with companies such as Nuestar, Diebold, ChoicePoint
-SEC filings
-Bush crony connection
-Compnay leadership profiles

etc.

26. DARPA! POINDEXTER! Remember the DARPA program that was SUPPOSEDLY SCRAPPED
?????!!!!!! Apparently, THAT was ANOTHER FREAKIN' LIE!

In 2003 AT&T built “secret rooms” hidden deep in the bowels of its central
offices in various cities, housing computer gear for a government spy operation which
taps into the company's popular WorldNet service and the entire Internet. These
installations enable the government to look at every individual message on the Internet
and analyze exactly what people are doing. Documents showing the hardwire installation
in San Francisco suggest that there are similar locations being installed in numerous other
cities.
The physical arrangement, the timing of its construction, the governmentimposed
secrecy surrounding it, and other factors all strongly suggest that its origins are
rooted in the Defense Department's “Total Information Awareness” (TIA) program
which brought forth vigorous protests from defenders of Constitutionally-protected civil
liberties last year:
“As the director of the effort, Vice Adm. John M. Poindexter, has described
the system in Pentagon documents and in speeches, it will provide
intelligence analysts and law enforcement officials with instant access to
information from Internet mail and calling records to credit card and
banking transactions and travel documents, without a search warrant.”
--The New York Times, 9 November 2002
To mollify critics, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
spokesmen have repeatedly asserted that they are only conducting “research” using
“artificial synthetic data” or information from “normal DoD intelligence channels” and
hence there are “no U.S. citizen privacy implications” (Department of Defense, Office of
the Inspector General report on TIA, December 12, 2003). They also changed the name
of the program to “Terrorism Information Awareness” to make it more politically
palatable. But feeling the heat, Congress made a big show of allegedly cutting off
funding for TIA in late 2003, and the political fallout resulted in Admiral Poindexter's
abrupt resignation last August. However, the fine print reveals that Congress eliminated
funding only for “the majority of the TIA components,” allowing several “components”
to continue (DoD, ibid). The essential hardware elements of a TIA-type spy program are
being surreptitiously slipped into “real world” telecommunications offices.

If a corporation's claims of proprietary ownership conflict with freedom and democracry, then freedom and democracy prevail in a free democracry. Only in a fascist corporatocracy do proprietary claims trump freedom and democrary.

I was able to download the entire file, but was reading the file, when I linked to page 10, where he describes how the splicing was done in the San Francisco office. Immediately after I linked, my computer froze.

I went back to Wired News, and was not able to link back to the PDF file. I checked to see if the file I downloaded worked and luckily it is saved. But wired News' link doesn't work anymore.

67. very important final paragraph of article - ONLY EFF WAS IN GAG ORDER:
Last paragraph in the Wired article on this release:

The court's gag order is very specific in barring only the EFF, its representatives and its technical experts from discussing and disseminating this information. The court explicitly rejected AT&T's motion to include Klein in the gag order and declined AT&T's request to force the EFF to return the documents.

Looks like we non-EFF folks can spread the word, and so can media people like Keith Olbermann if he so chooses.

68. The WIRED.com blog on these issues is now one of my bookmarks
I recommend you add it too - many important and useful comments and updates:

Today they cite Seymour Hersh in a new piece in the New Yorker's Talk of the Town section. Older posts and the comments in them are also meaty.

72. Someone On DU Really Needs To Break This Down More.
I read the docs and am in shock. But I'm also in shock as to how little attention this is getting on DU right now.

Is this as big as a story in reality as it seemed to be to me? Is this something that's going to break further? Was this a huge leak or was it already predicted to some degree? What does all this mean? What can we expect to happen? What level of attention is this going to receive? Is this just a non story or a big one?

I, and I'm sure many other DU'ers, could really use the investigative DU'ers to provide insight to those questions. This story is shocking to me. (though I can't say it comes as a surprise, but to still see it in writing like that, jesus christ.)

78. It's more of a confirmation than anything.
The techs knew -- there have been hot discussions going on for several years now in technical forums, and lots of complaints from old school phone workers as they began to see this weirdness.

The drug dealers knew, the terrorists knew, but the U.S. public is the last to know.

I posted this Feb 03 and I'm probably more cynical about this nation than I was then:

The days of actual, physical "wiretaps" are long past. Nobody has to go down to the telephone exchange and patch into any actual cables -- they simply type in the correct codes (hopefully with a proper warrant) and there they are.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=141&topic_id=19009&mesg_id=19065

It appears now the part about the warrant was wildly optimistic.

You don't fight this kind of crap by playing their game. You don't start using PGP, and meeting with your friends in dark alleys, etc. The bad guys are better at that than you are, they have more practice.

Instead you stand up and face them and tell them they are full of shit.

You are correct OPERATIONMINDCRIME, this is the biggest story on DU today, this is bigger than the comings and goings of any Rove indictment. But I think people are having a little trouble wrapping their minds around it, because it is proof that the rule of law in the United States is broken.
