Just heard all Veteran's records have been stolen
Every Veteran is at risk now of having all their personel information made available to any and all. Over fifty million official records have been lost. I am one of those and I can only blame this Administration for it's carelessness. It never happened under Clinton...

6. I just heard it on the Radio but there is a thread in LBN
I also must have gotten the numbers wrong because the thread in LBN say over 26 million. The news I heard was virtually every single Veteran has had their records compromised.

3. Welcome to Bush's Amerikkka!
And of course, like all other companies that reported the same, they'll claim it was an accident or it was stolen. Surrrre it was....

NOTICE A PATTERN PEOPLE. This isn't the first time we have read about records being stolen or lost.

Edited on Mon May-22-06 01:44 PM by lpbk2713

Some govt employee had access info on his home computer. His home was broken into and the data was compromised somehow. I heard the number of veterans was something like 26 million. (I'm one of em)

WASHINGTON Social Security numbers and other personal data belonging to (m) millions of veterans have been stolen from the home of a Veterans Affairs employee.
V-A Secretary Jim Nicholson says there's no evidence that the burglars have used the personal data -- or even that they know they have it.

Nicholson says the information belonging to more than 26 (m) million veterans was taken home by a data analyst without authorization and then stolen.

edited for typo

15. This is smelling like 5 day old fish
That's an enormous amount of data for that person to just happened to have taken home, then the robbery just manages to occur when he has that at home.

14. I'm a vet too.
Here's another scary thing I think. Mervyn's just wants you so badly to sign up for a credit card because you'll get more money off your purchase sometimes. They were always bugging me so one day I gave in and the clerk asked me for my SSN. At first I didn't want to but she said it'll be eaiser to get it, etc. I wrote it down and handed to her and she gave it back. On the application I have my work address and phone number but a few days later my husband said they had called my unlisted home number so say "thanks". Then later on I thought and it has to be true: All these little microchips they imbed in their products will, let's say ping, on your purchase card and use it to track that product in your home or in the person's home you might have given that product to as a gift. When my card came it I just cut it up and threw it away. I don't want any store's card but guess they'll track me anyway on any card I might use.

17. Hmmmm -
sounds like a good excuse for an unscrupulous, corrupt Government to screw vets out of benefits or payments due - "gee, we're sorry, pal - we have no record of your service". Now go ahead and flame me as a tinfoiler, I don't care. I would put NOTHING past these bastards.

19. and they're not doing a damn thing about it.
My husband is a vet and I looked into what the VA is doing to help vets in this matter. The answer is nothing. They're rehashing the same old identity theft advice and that's it.

This story stinks to high heaven. The employee is unnamed and no reason is given for why the hell anyone would take that data home in the first place. What possible legitimate reason is there for anyone to take the records of virtually every vet in the country home? And what are the odds that a burglar would choose to take something like that? Either the burglary is lie or the whole thing is a lie.

I'm furious, mostly because I feel helpless - not a goddamn thing we can do and not a goddamn thing the VA is going to do.

20. Some of these thefts must be the way they populate their PNAC NSA
Edited on Mon May-22-06 02:09 PM by higher class
database. Theft by theft - they are filling their database So, it doesn't matter if you are a Qwest user who only calls other Qwest numbers - if you are a veteran - you've had it.

Another nice way to treat our veterans. Reduced budget, HIV contamination of tools used in some locations - now you know how you are honored.

OK - I don't know that PNAC NSA stole those records - but the motive and the criminal mind is there. Let's see how it churns.

How can so MUUUCCCCHHHH data be hacked and stolen? How many banks are broken into electronically? How many PCs have been stolen? Is there any list out there? Are there Russians or Eastern Europeans or Asians who are still stealing the data? For themselves?

We've got to ask!

21. Can we find out the state? Some states have security breach notification
laws which require that people affected be notified when something like this occurs.
See http://www.pirg.org/consumer/credit/statelaws.htm#breach
for more info on this. As that page states, it's because of the CA law on this that we found out about Choicepoint.

24. Never mind.. found the info... discharged since 1975 so that effects...
DH's brother, nephew and niece.

When I talked to my Dad about it (before knowing the discharge dates stated so far) he didn't get that there could be more to it and someone could steal his identity and mess with his credit. I did suggest he keep an eye on his credit report with a free one from his bank/credit union... he never has and really should check it once in a while just in case.
