McGreevey's memoir details gay trysts

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEWARK, N.J. -- Former Gov. James E. McGreevey once resorted to anonymous homosexual trysts at highway rest stops, according to recently released excerpts from his memoir being released later this year.

McGreevey - who proclaimed himself "a gay American" in 2004 while announcing his impending resignation as governor - describes his long struggle with his homosexuality in the book "The Confession."

According to the excerpts published Sunday in The Star-Ledger of Newark, McGreevey engaged in the secret encounters because he feared having a relationship with a man would ruin his chances of success as a politician.

"So, instead, I settled for the detached anonymity of bookstores and rest stops - a compromise, but one that was wholly unfulfilling and morally unsatisfactory," McGreevey wrote.

2. I am totally amazed he did this
bad enough to write a book but to have written what evidently is a sensational tell all just stupid.

3. No, it's the reality of far too many gay men
who remain closeted because of the idiots on the religious right who condemn all gay people. They are the perfect heterosexual husbands, but lead a secret life because of societal pressures. You call him an idiot, I call him brave for not only announcing that he gay, but for telling the truth that so many feel they have to hide.

6. That part I fully applaud - timing it right before the election when the
rightwing is having trouble mobilizing their base is another. He's not just gay - he's also a politician and a lawmaker. He knows what timing means.

If this was ANY gay man you would be right. But ,why deny every other part of who he is and the impact?

13. We're not just before the election
For what it's worth, McGreevey's book will be long forgotten when that Tuesday in November rolls around. I haven't seen a lot of right-wing hand-wringing on this, and I don't think we will.

7. He should have said "I'm a self-hating gay, who happens to be American"
He was elected to public office, ostensibly to be a leader, but when outed he writes a tell-all that sounds like it belongs in a confessional.

I'm sorry he found his secret tryts and double life to be unfulfilling and sordid. But by writing this book at this time, he is undermining the cause of all gay Americans, those who are taking it on the chin every day and saying "This is normal, this is who I am and I'm just like the rest of you in every way but one, and one that doesn't impact anybody else so butt out."

He just threw chum in the water and the sharks are going to be out in force proclaiming this one poor putz's angst is proof that the gay lifestyle is aberrant and immoral.

IMHO, he's anything but brave.

4. The headline was enough to nauseate me.....TOO MUCH INFORMATION!
Many hundreds of thousand other guys his age faced the same situation honestly, with courage, survived and-eventually-thrived. Its a shame two women had to suffer for his vanity. McGreevey is just trying to cash in with his tell-all bio.

A sad and disturbing personal history. God knows I've done MANY things I'm not proud of but I can promise you I'll never write an autobiography outlining them for the world to see!

8. I won't condemn him. He has had enough of that I think. Perhaps
writing this book gave him an outlet he needed? He tried to do the "correct" thing and live as a straight man, he tried to live the way society claims is the "right" way. It is sad that he felt the need to hide his true identity for so long... I am glad he is finally free to live his life in the way his heart knows is true.

Perhaps he was not strong enough to face the world openly in his past, perhaps it is true that the scandal threw open the closet door. But why anyone feels the need to kick this man now - I just don't understand. There is always the chance that his book may give others the courage to live openly. There is always the chance it will help someone else who - like McGreevey did - feels required to live a false life to be accepted.

But regardless of the timing I am glad that McGreevey feels comfortable enough now to write his story, and to own his life. I hope he finds peace and happiness.

10. I'd be sympathetic if he hadn't given his boyfriend a six figure job
As head of the state's department of homeland security no less. I mean most philandering politicians find a place for their beloved in the typing pool.

The guy's a slimebag--although I will say he did improve the Motor Vehicle Bureau. In New Jersey that counts for something.

11. McGreevey is pathologically corrupt. He literally can't help himself
After he resigned as governor, he accepted a job at a friend's law firm. But that didn't last longer than half a year; his friend fired him for unethical behavior.

12. Isn't the book being published by Regan books?
The same Judith Regan who used to have a show on Fox?

Doesn't that tell you all you need to know about whom this book is designed to embarrass and what political end it hopes to achieve?
