Vince Gill got Dixie Chicks' back!!!
He says Nashville was wrong to tear them down. He says artists' political views should not be cause for their career being ruined.

Always thought Vince was ok, unlike that scumbag Toby Keith.

And, by the way Vince, the Dixie Chicks are back, better than ever!!

3. He's right
Are celebrities/artists supposed to have no views on politics? Are they not citizens of their respective nations? Why should they keep quiet on their views just because of what they do for a living? It's not like their jobs are positions where they can reasonably be considered authorities or "guides" of the public, so there's no logical reason to expect them to keep quiet.

5. CNN Headline news continues to air bits and pieces of the
Dixie Chicks video, this morning. They have gone to breaks about 3 times showing the video and playing "the" song. They did about a 5 minute piece on it earlier.

Looks like they may like the look and sound of it all. :woohoo:

or maybe not...they are smiling and it is great.

8. give and take
I've never had a problem with entertainers voicing their opinion regardless of their political persuasion. I'm sometimes mildly surprised at their reaction when their remarks generate the voicing of an opinion that opposes the one they made.

14. Welcome to DU!
I never had much problem, but I do have to admit that Ted Nugent has fallen in my mind. When he played Janet Reno Sucks at his concert along with the rest of his wingnutisms.
Perhaps he is cetifiably crazy though. Not the chicks.

21. Ted Nugent "fell" in my mind back in the 70's.
When I actually heard him play. Two nights running. (I worked in the club--would NOT have attended otherwise.)

I thought he sucked. The memory lingers on--so does the tinnitus.

But his right wing nuttiness has awakened me.

I was kinda pointing out how a tolerant person can turn on someone.
I know the freeps aren't tolerant, so I guess I have no point on the chicks debacle.

20. Well, I did find this
Gill: Maines Has Been Bashed Enough
Vince Gill told reporters backstage at the CMT Flameworthy 2003 Video Music Awards that it’s time to forgive Natalie Maines for her remarks about President Bush during the Dixie Chicks’ London concert on March 10. “There’s political leaders that have said a lot worse things about George Bush than Natalie did and nobody rips for it,” Gill said. “I feel like she’s been bashed enough. If she made a mistake, or if she feels that way, it’s past the point. They’ll have to deal with the consequences that come from that. … I can’t jump into the fray to say I think this person’s wrong and this person’s right, because I think being decent and kind and forgiving and all those things are much better things to possess than being right.” from cmt.com 4/8/03

That was three years ago.

24. That wasn't really a defensive statement...

... It was the diplomatic way to support them, you know, without hurting your own career... I understand not every musician has the balls to take such a risk with their career and that's why we hail the ones who did as "heros" for the cause... Vince doesn't exactly qualify for that award.

25. Maybe he didn't agree with them 100%
I think that defending their right to free speech is more important than him jumping on the anti-Bush bandwagon. I am not saying that he is a hero, but I am realistic enough to know that not everyone thinks like I do. Vince Gill could have jumped on the "bash the Dixie Chicks" bandwagon too, but decided to voice his opinion on free speech instead. That says a lot more about him than someone like Toby Keith.

Just sayin... :)

23. Vince defended the Chicks in 2003.
On May 22 at the Academy of Country Music (ACM) awards ceremony in Las Vegas there were boos when the group's nomination for entertainer of the year awards was announced. However, the broadcast's host, Vince Gill, reminded the audience that everyone is entitled to freedom of speech.

and one of them said something rather profound (don't know which one as I was only listening, not watching) when asked if they lost any friends over the flap in 2003.

"People who commit crimes and go to jail have families who support them and stand by them...people who have actually done something wrong."

The implication, to me, was that it was so sad and so stupid to lose people over expressing an opinion.

39. Amy Grant has always seemed like a real Christian to me
In the same vein as John R. Cash, who was Christian to the bone and definitely no fan of the neocons.

I've been a big fan of Ms. Grant's for a while. My wife met her once and thought she was just terrific.

38. He's a stand-up guy ...

When one of the people who helped him and a lot of other artists from Oklahoma when they weren't well-known was retiring/dying, Vince rearranged his schedule to make a small tribute show that made him no money.

Reba McIntire, as a counter-example, was too busy with some movie or television show or something.

Toby Keith wasn't invited. :-)

she built our hospital's rehab center, she built the Pottsboro High School, and has always been generous wilth her time and her talent to help the home folk. I don't know anything about Toby Keith. This distaste for GWB business transcends party lines, though-it's about right and wrong.
